Hello all,New to this forum and hope someone has some answears for me. My teenage son and I are doing the SR20DET swap into a 92 hatch. I bought the SR engine, transmission and harness from a guy locally that gave up on his project. He purchased it from someone on eBay and purchased it as an S14 kit.The engine is in and running without any problems. We know for a fact that the engine is not an S13 but some of the S14 parts are not working on it either. Here are my questions on the S14 or S15 engine and why.

1. Neither of the Sentra oil filters for an S14 (Fram PH4386) or S13 (Fram PH3682) will fit on this engine. The thread diameter and pitch of those filters will not match with the housing threads on the engine and the S14 filter (sentra Fram PH4386) has to large of an o-ring flange diameter to seal on the flange even if the threads were correct. We found that a Fram PH6607 is the correct thread pitch and O-ring diameter.

The filter that was on the engine has a part number 15208-65F00 and that I'm told is an S14/S15 filter???

2. The Power steering pulley and crank pulley are 3 rib. I was under the impression that only S15 engines used the 3 rib belt???

3. This engine has no visable sign of ever having an EGR valve or system like is shown in the JDM S14 service manual. Should it not have been so equipted????

4. The transmission is a 5 speed but did not come with the engine when the local guy bought it so that rules out the 6 speed test.

I tried to find a serial number date code reference for the engine online but had no luck. The SN is 257258.

I have some driveshaft questions also but figure I may need to start another topic for that. I'm going to throw them on here just in case someone can help.

I'm making a one piece steel DS for the car. The car was an auto and the joints were junk anyway. The rear flange, yoke and U-joint are no problem. I was able to get the correct replacement u-joint at autozone. I have the transmission yoke and flange that came with the JDM transmission but it was cut off so I don't have a complete DS.

The rear u-joint is smaller than the front. I checked at autozone and my guy there says the u-joint for front or rear, S13 or S14 are all the same.

1. What is the correct front u-joint for a JDM 5 speed transmission yoke????

Thank you

I use two different type of filters on my s14a sr20det -- Mobile 1 M108 and a WIX which I like better 51365. The WIX filter is the best I have found so far for our sr20 motors. It keeps oil pressure at idle steady at around 20 - 21 psi which is good for the head valve train. I would stay away from anything FRAM. There is a s14a being after and a s14b being before. Slight differences in wiring and such and turbo is a hybrid ball bearing. The easiest way to identify an s15 sr20det would be by the turbo since it is fully ball bearing. I used a one piece driveshaft from the driveshaft shop which is awesome for our cars and if you do not have it already then you will need a VLSD or LSD setup on it or your son will end up in a ditch and all the money down the drain. The U joint at the rear is the same for auto and or manual 240sxs but if you let the driveshaft shop do it --- it will make it a lot easier plus the drive shafts are light and fit like a glove. Hope this helps

yeah he could pull it from the Garrett part number or just spin the bearing it should spin freely and make a really cool bearing sound if it is an s15 turbo. Hell my GT2871r spins for minutes after I turn the car off.

I do not know then -- I can tell a difference between my old hybrid s14 turbo and the newer gt2871r ball bearing I run now. I could barely hear my s14 turbo and it would not spin freely very long after I turned the car off. My gt28 makes a more metallic sound and spins longer but it could be the bigger housing. I do not know but I can tell a difference after running both turbos...... but yeah the number on the side can be cross referenced at

Thanks for the help guys. The engine has purple injectors and I crossed the SN for the turbo so it is an S14.

Yep got the VLSD. Finished the DS up at work last night and it's in. Wanted to take it out for "spin" so to speeak but its been snowing since Sunday and I'm not real crazy about the fat low profile tires he bought for it...lol

Getting ready to start the body work. We bought a JDM Sivia S13 front for car and it looks really cool. I will try and post up some pics.
