okay so i have just swapped my 89 240sx with a red top, i dont know the timing setting to time it at! What notch is it that is should be hitting every time when u use the timing gun???? also i cant get it to stay at an idle when i crank it, it only stays for a second and dies out could it be that my timing is way off and it wont stay at idle or might it be that its not getting proper fuel pressure????. Im really tired of my battery dieing out on me cause i just barley bought one and its already dead!!! i just want my car to run good its been to long since i have drove it PLEASE HELP

I got mine from the shop and they had it set to 21 and I took it to my mechanic and he set it to 16 he said thats the stock timing...that is also how I passed emissions.

the marks are set up like this

5 ATDC 0 TDC 5 BTDC 10 BTDC 15 BTDC 20 BTDC

So you want it around the second mark from the right, 15 BTDC

what if it doesnt start at all???? then do i still line up that needle to the second to last mark on the right???? or does it need to be at zero and then from there adjust it to wear i can use a timing gun to time it, cause my car wont start at all every know and then i get some putts out of it when i crank it but thats it. I just need to get it were my car can stay at some kind of idle so that i can adjust my timing to hit that spot each time what could the problem be that it wont idle????

I had this issue as well, my car would only stay on for a few seconds. I found out I was flooding my cylinders and some other problems. I made thread about this awhile back, search up my SN for previous threads made in this SR forum. So check to see if you're flooding or now first and search up.

It helps if you search in the future, but I'll let you know. Just pull the spark plugs out and let the gas evaporate. Leave the spark plugs out for a few hours.

ya thats what i thought i just read about that but i wanted to make sure. also if im trying to get my car to start should i set my timing at the second notch from the left which would be 0 and then adjust my cas sensor cause i think thats what this forum i found is saying.

Yup, follow that guide, and also get yourself a Factory Service Manual.

ok well i took spark plugs out for couple hours, and just the other day i was gettin ready to put on my new oil pan, and when i was draining it gas came out so i let it drain put the new one on and still no start, the only time it would start and idle for a second was when i took out the fuel fuse. which makes me think that my injectors and o-rings are bad and that my car is probably pushing to much fuel. but what do you guys think????

You sir may be correct on that, you're car is probably burning the remaining fuel in your cylinders, I had this exact thing happen. Hook up a gauge to your fuel line and see what you're fuel pressure is at? Also, have you replaced the o-rings for the injectors?

ya i was about to hook up a gauge but also what is the pressure suppose to be at like 38???? and i haven't ever changed the injectors or o-rings but i also haven't ever had this motor running i have been tryin to get it running. But my friend has a fuel rail with injectors and o-rings, i think he only used it for a little bit and has had it for 6 months total, so im gonna put that on and see what the pressure is at and go from there, ill let u guys know.

wish me luck

38 is fine if your vacuum line is hooked up.

Just turn the key on until the fuel pump comes on, and see what your pressures at, mines at like 39-40psi, thats what I was told is normal. Try it out.

You need to buy yourself a compression tester, their not that expensive.

How to set fuel pressure

1. Hook everything up

2. Unhook vacuum source to FPR

3. Turn car on, let it run

4. Adjust FPR until gauge reads 43.5/44

5. Rehook up vacuum line

Enjoy

k heres what i have done.

took of my valve cover set the cam gears 10 and 12

changed my fuel rail with different one with different injectors

and then started my car it started and idled but not a steady idle so i had thought that i fixed the problem, then saw that i forgot to plug back in the 2 plugs close to the injectors by the manifold kinda close to were u adjust the throttle screw, so i plugged em in and tried to start it and wouldnt crank over i even took off the valve cover again and set it again but nothing.

what could it possibly be???? could it be that since they sent me the wrong ecu a j4 that they sent me the wrong harness as well????

yes sir its a 62. And i just figured out what the problem was today im not sure if having a type x harness out of a s13 black top matters or if my harness is just bad, but i think that is wat they sent me cause they sent the j4 ecu!!!!. So today i put on my brothers harness that we did for his 240 and my car starts right up, idle was steady just sputtered when it tried to collect boost but the timing is off, so i ordered a red top harness and im gonna change my plugs over to that n then ill be good to go

sometimes i just feel like doin this to people since hurtin my car would be a crime hahahah jk
