But you can go the KA-T route, which is, in many ways better

Better? Hardly. If you're planning on getting an SR though, make sure you inspect it. Lots of the good clips/used engines were sold already and it looks like alot of the junkier engines are comin over to try to fill demand, so that's somethin to be careful of. So in that sense the KA would be a better choice.

maybe an explanation of the nissan motor codes is in order?

the first letters refer to the block family (ex. KA, SR, VG, VQ, CA, etc.)

next two numbers refer to the displacement (KA24 is 2.4 L, SR20 is 2.0 L, etc.)

If it has a D, it's DOHC (KA24E is SOHC, KA24DE is DOHC)

E means EFI, can't think of of a motor that doesn't have it, but i'm new to nissans.

T or TT means single turbo or twin turbo, respectively.

KA24DE is a block from the KA family, 2.4 liters, DOHC with EFI, naturally aspirated

SR20DET is a block from the SR family, 2.0 liters, DOHC, EFI, with a single turbo

so basically, no you can't make an SR20DET out of the stock motor (KA24E or KA24DE) because they're not the same block.

like i said, i'm relatively new to nissans, so feel free to correct any incorrect info from above. nissan has about the most logical engine coding system of anyone out there, imo. coming from toyotas, it's certainly easier (2JZGTE, 4AGZE, 5SFE, 3SGTE, etc.). but at least toyota and honda give you some info on the displacement or head type or aspiration. i confuse LS1, LS2, and LS7 all the time...
