Ok I plan on buying an sr20det in a couple of months I was going to go ka-t but it's just to expensive with the whole rebuilding thing.

DO people usually 1)buy an sr20det and then swap a better turbo in if they swap any turbo at all or do they 2)buy sr20de and then add the turbo?wouldn't it be cheaper to do number option 2?

Basically what im trying to do is find the cheapest option from the two

***I didn't do much research, correct me if im wrong but the garret gt2871r is the stock turbo for the s15 right???

Doesn't the S14 use a t25 turbo and the s15 use a t28?

1. People usually buy an SR20DET and then upgrade the turbo.2. It takes more than swapping a turbo onto a car to make it efficient and powerful in that form, I am not sure on the prices of the changes, but it seems like it would take quite a bit of money to turbo a DE.3. The GT2871 is a high performance turbo best fit for racing applications. The S14 SR20DET came with a journal bearing T28 tubro, the S15 came with a ball bearing T28 turbo, also known as the GT28R. The S13 SR20DET's used the T25 journal bearing turbo.

Well some what correct

Yes Its easier to just buy the DET cuz the ECU is already set up for being turbo, oil/coolant feeds/returns. You also get the SR DFI (Direct Fire igniton) AKA Coil Packs and CAS system over the distrubutor. OEM DET Ign, system is good to +500whp

I wouldnt really concider the 2871R a high performance turbo, more of a mid range preferred by drifters

S14 SR's also came with BB turbos (I have one), although ive heard rumors that SOME Zenki Models came with Journal bearing, although I've yet to see one.The only OEM T-28 that i know if that is Journal bearing is the Pulsar GTI-R turbo (i have one of these too).

Wiring and Bigger stock injectors too All the little differences Make a BIG difference in the long run! It would nickle and dime you to death to replicate from a de to a det.

Its kinda hard to tell if you've never delt with them before

BB turbos will spin easier/longer hold the turbo to where the shaft is levelListen to it when it spins, If you've heard BB roller bearings before it'll sound like that, Like a Whhhrrrrrrrrrr sound haha

Journal bearings kinda stop quickly, Journal bearings dont make sound when you spin it

when i compared a s13 t25, s14 t28, and a gt2871r, the t25 stopped almost immediately, the t28 spun like 3 secs more and the gt spun way longer. so im guessin the t28 might be bb

Any option is not cheap. A SR20DET in the states was an imported junkyard engine and 9 times out of 10 should get at least a basic rebuild on top of the $1500-2500 for the engine + all other bolt-on mods. A 2871r would make me want a rebuild just to do things right the first time. A SR20DE converted to turbo is going to require machining for oil squirters and lines, probably still need a gasket kit and possible bearings, would benefit from lower compression pistons and would at least require a rom tune + bolt-ons, the same concept for the KA. Either way it costs $$$$$$$$$$$
