i was considering boosting my sohc not too much but enough to make it more fun to drive. i was wondering cost wise which is the better option. i can do the swap myself so install is not an issue. i want my car to be able to be daily driven with a little bit of track time. what is everyone's opinion. i was going to use a rebuilt sohc engine. thoughts comments all will be helpful

After a rebuild and a turbo kit(a decent one rather) your going to be probably around 4-5 grand. Granted, nobody knows exactly how much you will pay for a rebuild, it all depends on your market. For that money, you will get a nice setup, no doubt. With 1 bar of boost and a properly sized turbo, you will be around 300 to the wheels. VERY respectable and a great streetable/trackable power level. Keep in mind you gotta slap on a 255 l/hr pump and some injectors to keep up.

On the other hand, you can snag an s13 SR for lets say 2000 for a CLEAN one(but clean doesnt mean its internals are all peachy), slap a different compressor on and a few other supporting mods and be at the same power level for about the same to a little less money. The trade off here is with the KA24E, you KNOW its rebuilt and you know what the internals can handle. With the SR its a crap shoot.

My advice if you go the SR route is look for an add WITH a compression test done to the motor and shown in the add. At least you will have a good idea of the condition its in. Its really a 6 in one, half a dozen in the other kind of situation. Just depends on the kind of person you are as far as "insurance" goes.

I like the idea of a turbo KA (I turbo'd my KA at one point). But you'd probably be better off getting an SR because its made to have a turbo on it you know? you'll probably have less issues in the end. Either way i hope you find what your looking for. :bigthumb:

You will need tuning, injectors,a walbaro fuel pump, and arp head studs to safely boost a KAEt, as long as you dont rev past the stock rev limit things stay nice and together.

Ps a oil cooler will help things at the track, also a catch can will add life to your boosted baby

All it really comes down to is money. If you can find a $2,000 SR20 go for that route but most I've seen go from $2,500 in crappy condition to upwards of $6,000 for spotless blacktops. KA24's are cast iron blocks and pretty sturdy, I come from the Honda side of things so not having floating cylinders is a God-send for me haha. Nothing wrong with boosting a KA24, its naturally torquey in the bottom end with the way its designed, and if you bring boost on around 3k rpm you'll start building power where the torque curve starts falling off. :dblthumb:

I'm currently sourcing another Japanese-block KA24DE to rebuild to turbo since they're dirt cheap, you can get a KA24 for like $200. I only plan to run 12 PSI so I'm going to leave the stock crank/rods and just throw in deep skirt lower compression pistons. With new bearings/seals all around and it'll cost less than half of building an SR20, I have a ceramic external wastegate turbo from a Cummins truck and I'll be running about 12 PSI. All-in-all it'll be less than $1,500.

Just some food for thought.
