I'm trying to find out what all needs to be done to replace my oil pump on my sr? Dose anyone have any pointers or experiance doing this. I'm sure someone out there does with all the reading I have been doing on the failure rate of the sr oil pump. Does the head need to be removed? Timing chain? Thanks in advance for any info.

The head and timing chain do not need to be removed, however both the lower (steel) and upper (aluminum) oil pans do.

Its much easier if the motor is out of the car.

Can it be done with the motor in the car? I assume that the lower steel pan you mentioned is the oil pan, but what is the upper aluminum one? Thanks for the good info, I'm glad to hear I don't need to pull the head.

You pretty much have to have the engine out to pull the oil pump. Unless you want to drop your whole steering rack and crossmember then its not possible. There is an upper and lower oil pan. The lower one is the black pan underneath. The upper is the aluminum piece that is inbetween the lower oil pan and the block.

Look in the factory service manual for directions.

Do you know where I could get a factory service manual?

Try looking in our FAQ sticky. I have a service manual for an S14 SR linked in it. You could have answered a lot of your questions had you taken the time to look first.

Id much rather pull a head off than change the oil pump on SR motors with the damn engine still in the car.

You have to drop the subframe to get the oil pan to clear the steering rack. Or unbolt the engine mounts + trans mount and lift it up until it clears the rack.
