Hi everyone. Here in the next month I have the plan to swap out the KA24DE from the 96' and slap in a SR20DET Blacktop. After doing much reading here on the site I have decided to NOT purchase my engine off of EBay. I will grab it from either Enjuku or Cardinal. So, down to my primary question at hand. Here in Utah, on cars that are 96' and newer, they don't smog them in the traditional manner. In other words, they dont slap a probe into the exhaust pipe to gather readings. Instead, as I'm sure they do in other states as well, they plug into the OBDII jack, and check the sensor readings. Now, here's where it gets interesting. There are a few models from what I understand that have communication problems with the testing system. As a result, the testing technician will check to see if the Check Engine light is on, if it is, he will fail it. However, if he is unable to get a reading from his system, and the vehicle states a "System Not Ready" He will pass the vehicle. It just so happens that 1996+ 240SX vehicles are in this group. I know this because my 240 just stated a "System Not Ready" and was passed. Now.. after that long (and perhaps not necessary) description, my question is this: After I replace the KA with the SR20DET, (complete of course meaning the ECU as well) will the OBDII functionality still be.. functional? I am wondering if it will give the "System Not Ready" reading, or.. even if it doesnt, and returns all of the pass data, I might not have to take it anywhere "special" to get it to be road worthy. This all goes out the window if OBDII is different in Japan of course. Anyone Know?
Thanks!
