Pretty much what you are doing is replacing the stock HLA with a solid piece of metal. Where the HLAs adjust the clearance between the cam and the lifter automatically, you now have to adjust the clearance between the lifter and the cam manually. You need to measure the clearance between the lifter and the cam for the all 4 valves for each cylinder. You set the motor to TDC for cylinder 1, measure the clearances, then do the same for the 3 other cylinders. After you figure out what your clerance is and what the clearance should be, you do the math to figure out what shim or combination of shims you need to get the right clearance. So for example, say that hypothetically your current shim is 4mm thick, you have a measured clearance of .3mm and you need the clearance to be something else. You would need to get a thicker shim if your measured clearance is too big and thinner shim if the measured shim is too small.
Hope that helps
