Ok I want an SR20DET in my 240, but i live in Southern California and I want it to pass smog (legitimately). What must I do to make this work? Can it be done?

Originally I wanted an RX-7 with the money I had to get myself a car. It was a finely tuned "athelete" and it had power up the ***. The RX-7 is out the window now, but the KA24DE isnt enough. I CAN get the SR20DET, but it MUST pass smog for me to get it. What must I do, what must I buy, what must I have to get it done?

Thanks for the help people. Cars are fun.

the only way to pass smog in our wonderful state of cali, is to pay someone a little extra to disregard the jdm motor, emissions should pass, but the visual is gonna be tough, im gonna have to start searching for a shop that will pass me

i'm impressed . . . his very first post being about smog legality of the sr20 and he wasn't flamed immediately? what's the world comin to? heheheh

welcome to the boards Towelie. . . this topic has been brought up numerous times before, but alas. . . seems like the only real answer anyone has is to find that unscrupulous smog tester and grease some palms . . .

please use the "search" function before posting next time. . .

I live in NC and we have the same wonderful ideas about emmisions as you guys in Cali. However I have been going to the same gas station to buy my gas for like the last 3 years. It's one of the few around here without pay at the pump and yeah some times it is a few cents more expensive than the other gas stations around but the person there knows my name when I go into pay for the gas it is obvious they appriciate my bussines. This gas station does inspections and minor jobs like brakes and a few other things to make money and the guy there has pretty much already told me that he is more interested in seeing if the RB25 will work than bust my chops for emmision. Well this wonderful story will do you no good if you have not got a working realtionship with a mechanic and need a fix quick but there are a lot of people on this board that work on cars as there job and may even work at a place that inspects cars around you. Just saying it might be worth a try to see if there are other NICO members that will let you pass inspection at there shop.

They managed to cut through a jungle of bureaucratic red tape and jump through all the necessary government hoops to get the Skyline legalized here in the states. Cost a small fortune but they did it.

Your best bet to pass smog in CA is to carry an extra benjamin or two and have a little "side chat" with your local smog technician. If he refuses to do it, I'm sure he has friends who know friends. Just be nice and cool about.. You can always go to his competitors.

also why they charge from 2x to 3x the amount that the skylines actually are worth in Japan. . . I'm too lazy to check their site but i think they have r32's going for mid 30k?? pretty steep for a car that's a decade old

I believe they do charge quite a steep price, I'm not sure whether or not it's 2x to 3x greater than JDM MSRP for the vehicle. However, with the costs of shipping and handling, custom fees, tarrifs, and US certification papers, the price is grossly inflated.

But hey, it's a JDM Skyline.
