Does anyone know if this has been attempted, woulda posted the question in the 300zx forum, but it seems a little dry.

Ive got a friend in Tennessee who owns one. Hes was telling me about the mods he wants to do, but he said his engine has seen better days. He could get a used SR20DET, for way cheaper than a VG30DETT. With the money he saves, he could get the Jun stroker kit, a boost controler, and maybe a new exhaust. Hes a spoiled rich boy, not really, hes pretty cool, he just needs some direction when it comes to spendin his money. Fact is, he got the car because he thought it looked tight. Now hes a speed freak, too bad the car had high miles on it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Honestly I would stick with the VG30DETT... has alot more potential for making power.

They do it in Japan fro weight savings issues and to ease the tuning hassles of a super tight engine bay - have you ever seen the inside of the 300zx - super tight.

super tight!!! just try changing a spark plug... it's crazy. even a mitsu 3000gt is easier, and that engine has a awd transmission in there somewhere.

definitly use the vg30dett, or even vg30det....they are less expensive everywhere....parts are much easier supplied by us suppliers, and it has no less potential than an SR, and i would be willing to say, has much more potential...why the hell would he want to go from a 3l, to a 2l?

I have a video somewhere on my computer of some guy who had dropped an RB26 into his Z32. Maybe that would be an option if he didn't want to put a VG30DETT in his Z?

Nice thing about the RB would be that there would be more space in the engine bay, but the swap would be a PITA, I would imagine.

That is a bad idea. Power to weight ratio just ain't there. 300ZX is a bit heavy for the SR20DET. And if I remember correctly the 300 that had the RB26DETT needed to have it's nose lengthened to fit the engine in there. If his engine is in bad shape....rebuild may be the easiest option, just replace all the stock with aftermarket....JUN has alot of toys for the 300ZX.

Just my thoughts....if he's thinking about costs, dropping a RB or SR in the Z32....alot of custom fabrication.

That video I have may not have been an RB26DETT, it may have been an RB25. I don't think it was a twin turbo (possibly single turbo conversion), and the body looked totally stock. But I know for sure it was an RB series.

Thanks for the replies. Well, I was just trying to find him some cost effective options. So far you guys would suggest just rebuilding the engine? Stillen has an a$$ load of stuff for the 300zx. I guess I'll run that idea by him. Hopefully he doesnt try to sell the car, his rice boy friends will probably try to get him to buy a civic or a tiburon.

Regardless...the RB25 and 26 are the same dimensions externally (or close enough) like I said...not sure about the work required to put it in there.

Can't imagine dropping a RB25 in when the RB26 costs around the same.....but the pictures I saw on Meggala's site had a RB25 in one of them.

I'm not sure on the weight but I think a 300ZX is like 3400 lbs, when a 240 is like 26-2700 lbs. Big difference. Use the VG30DETT and mod that out.
