I am relatively new to knowing anything about 240sx's, but am almost certain I am going to purchase one as sort or a project car in the near future so I have a couple of questions about the SR20DET engine going into the car I am going to get.

I was looking on http://www.srswap.com about the SR20DET engine I was planning on buying, the Black-Top S14 SR20DET now I am not quite sure, but would that fit into a 91 240sx (If im not mistaken it's a S13, sorry I am new to 240sx's). Also how much of a price would I be looking at to get that engine installed in the car? I have like $15000 to spend on it so I'm hoping I will have a lot of money after getting the engine and car for upgrades. I think if I priced the stuff right it was like $10k for the car and engine. Anyway thats a little off track. Any help about this would be appreciated, even if it seems like a newbie question.

If you are going to get an S13, you shouldn't spend more than like $2K. I got mine for $1500, it has some nice rims on there, and it had a blown head gasket. Perfect candidate for an SR swap. Probably could have gotten it for $1200, but I wanted the rims.

Next, if you intend to have a nice, quick little car, but never mod or upgrade it, then an S14/S15 SR20 swap would be a smart idea, because those engines have more power out of the box, due to bigger turbos, and VTC. If you intend to upgrade it, like most people do, then the S13 SR20 engine is a better choice; reasons being the intake design is different, and also, if you upgrade cams on an S14, then you lose the VTC, in essence knocking you down to S13 status. If I remember correctly, the turbos are a little different, but that still wouldn't justify the price difference (at least not for me).

I personally haven't researched the price for an installation for an S14 into an S13 shell, but for an S13 -> S13 conversion, I've seen anywhere from $1500-$2500, I'd expect at least $2000.

Another thing you might want to consider is that getting the AC to work on S14 swaps haven't been very successful. Apparently the wiring is a real PITA to do, if it's even been done at all yet.

If you want my opinion.....Take your $15000, find the cheapest S13 you can find, have the S13 engine installed, that'll take away 5-6K. Then spend the remainder on making it a 1320 dragger, or an autox champ.

Your decision though.

I would go with the s13 with the s13 engine, because you can make more power cheaper with the s13 and have perfectly working a/c.

If a/c is a big concern of yours. I make custom hoses for that particular swap.

In addition, if you're going to bother with modifying everything you may as well buy a redtop, we can get you to 320-350 rwhp with everything upgraded for about 10k including engine. : ) Enjoy your day.

Thanks for the Info guys. My original plan was to get a old S13. I found one in my town for like 2.5k in good condition then put the Red-Top S13 engine in and everything. It's nice to know that the car + engine won't run me too incredibly much so I can have more money for a body kit, and some other nice stuff. Thanks again guys.

I'd go with s13 motor also. 20hp difference isn't crap. especially when you pay another $500 for it. as far as installation goes, we install 'em for $1000. if you are interested send me an email. we are in virginia. [email protected]shaun
