Hey guys.... since this is my first post, please go easy on me :) I tried searching but I came up empty.

How can you visually distinguish between an S13 SR20DET (blacktop) and an S14 SR20DET (blacktop) I am thinkin of purchasing a 95-96 240SX and doing a swap. I'd just like some more information before I shell out $$$ and buy this car.

Also I read a post where you can have JimWolf reprogram your 240SX ECU so that you may use the existing wiring harness on the S13/S14 SR20DET. Is there any truth to this statement

Im also assuming that since the engine block is "SR" and not "KA" we wont be able to use our stock 240sx transmission and we will need the SR20DET transmission.

Is there a 6spd option that we may swap in?

Thanx.... you comments are welcome.

The S13 blacktop have a smooth valve cover. The S14 has a small bump on the 3rd cylinder on the valve cover (because of variable valve timing). When you buy an engine from any place almost all of them come with the transmission. The S15's use a 6sp, but I have yet to see a place that sells them individually. You would have to buy a whole S15 engine package to get the transmission and thats very expensive. Again when you buy an engine most come with the ecu and wiring, so you don't have to spend the money to have JWT reprogram the stock one for you. You will have to lengthen some of the wiring harness so it will mount in the US spot.

The intake manifold design on them is complete different as well.

JWT will reprogram SR20 ECUs for SR20s, or KA24s for KA24s, but not KA24s to SR20s or vice versa. Doesn't work that way, or at least I have never heard of it working that way.

The transmissions are the same, the bellhousings are different, its significantly easier just to get a SR transmission with the engine package, most places sell them together. Also, the SR20 transmission is supposed to be a bit stronger than the KA.

As Swift said, chances are you won't be able to get a S15 SR20, also, they are reportedly weaker as the gearbox is the same size with an extra gear, which leads to less material for each gear.

There is a HKS 6 speed option, but you'll be spending like 4,000 dollars just for the transmission if I remember correctly, plus all the other parts you'll need from them.

Enjoy your day!

Daunt, is the intake different on the S14's because of the low port head and new variable valves? i feel sheepish too cuz i cant remember if the injector sizes are the same too :bash lol

I believe the injector sizes are the same between the S13 and S14. I think their 370cc.

If you reprogram your KA, it still only supports one point of ignition, which in this case will be one coilpack. Thus, the reason that you have to get a distributor from an SR20DE plus the 600 dollars they want to reprogram it. If you don't mind doing some wiring, the SR20DET ECU is a simpler option.
