Having driven the car for a couple of weeks now, I've noticed that the syncros in the transmission are pretty jacked. Whatever Japanese fool wrecked their car, and thereby provided me with a front clip, sure didn't know how to shift very well. I imagine that within the next year or so, I'm definitely going to need a new transmission.

I did a search and all I saw was RB25DET transmission. Are there any other, easier to acquire, transmissions that can be mated to the SR20DET?

I am in the same boat as you. I will need a new transmission eventually and people have told me that Heavy Throttle should be able to sell me one for around $250-300.

Thanks for the info. I'm concerned about getting another SR transmission, because I figure that it is likely to have been as abused as the one I have now. I might just have to bite the bullet, and buy a couple transmissions with the understanding that they're going to go out every couple of years.

its real easy.

Get a 240sx transmission from any year. Swap bellhousings. Bolt into place.

To my understanding the difference between the SR, KA and RB20 trannys is the bellhousing. My suggestion is to follow Cyberkreig's instructions...

This is really great information. After seeing the flywheel and clutchplate in my SR, I would suspect some really hard driving and will probably need to replace my transmission eventually anyway. Plus if I remember correctly, and it has been a while since I punched the numbers, the gear ratios in the KA24DE are a little closer(?) in the low gears and wider in the high gears, allowing a higher top speed, and better low-end torque.

there was a good thread about gear ratos of the differen S chassys. Ca trannies were definatly different. but AFAIK all S13 SR & KA ratios are the same.

I will dig into some old info that I had stored and try to have the gear ratios up in the next week or so. This seems to be one area of tuning that isn't paid much attention to...and up til know the only upgrade I knew of was HKS's 6-speed sequential transmission...for $12,800 YIKES, NO THANKS..as nice as it would be...
