whats the difference between the s14 and s13 sr20det bottom end?

I think one difference are the pistons.

so a s13 redtop head should bolt up to a s14 sr20det block?

nope...totally two different engines.....only s13 redtop and blacktops are interchangable

S14 SR has the VVT Head or whatever it is.

they are slightly different. the front cover for the s14/15 is slightly different and there is another line for oil running through the front on the s14/15. Otherwise the crank, and pistons, rods are all the same.

Head wise, the heads are different. low port on the s13 and high port on the s14/15.

Yes you can put a s13 head on a s14/15 block.

do i have to stop up the oil passage on the s14 block if i'm going to use a s13 head?

you don't have to plug up the oil passage. it will get covered with a s13 headgasket and head.

since the head gasket and head blocks the extra oil passage, will my s14 bottom end and s13 head setup be as reliable as a regular sr20det?
