The Red Top and the Black Top are the same motor as your know. The Black Top generally has more horsepower than the Red Top. If you're looking for show, go Red Top, if you're looking for go, go Black Top.

I believe the black tops have variable valve timing as well. If you want to throw in some big cams, go with the red top... The Red tops tend to be a bit easier to work on, and allow more modifications.

(correct me if I'm wrong)

are you asking about blacktop S13(95-97 180sx) engine or blacktop S14 engine? blacktop S13 is the same as redtop S13, just newer.

S14 has the variable valve timing and whatnot. little more power, but nothing major. again, price increase is mostly due to the lower miles. id stick with 180sx blacktop, unless you are rebuilding it. if so, save a little money and just get the redtop.

The difference between the S13 Redtop and Blacktop is the addition cooling fins (although these were on the last-year Redtops as well; if you think you have one, make sure you don't just have a blacktop painted red) and the fact that Blacktops will have less miles. Other than that, nothing significant.

S14 Black/Notch tops are newer as well, and have more HP stock, but this is gleaned through Variable Cam Timing and refined internals.

If you plan to modify your engine's internals, go S13 Red/Blacktop. The high-port head gives it greater power potential. If you're planning to add things outside your engine, like maybe a new turbo, F/SMIC, etc. then go with the S14.

I believe most aftermarket camshafts disable VCT anyway, meaning you'll be left with a less powerful engine than if you simply went S13.
