Im thinking it's mainshaft bearings, but not positive..

When cold, it seems loudest, but as it warms up, it get quieter, but never really goes away.. It's a sortof whine, that goes away when the clutch is depressed, but returns when clutch pedal is released.. Most noticable stationary, but Im sure it's doing it moving, as well.. Car's too loud to tell

Dont think so.. my past experience is that the t/o bearing makes noise when under load; when the pedal is depressed..

This is doing the opposite.. makes noise when released, or no load on the t/o bearing..

Is it true that a KA24DE trans will work, if i swap with the sr20det's bell housings?

The noise in the transmission is most likely the input shaft bearing.

The KA24E and the KA24DE 5-speed trannies are the same with the exception of some additional sensors which in your case is a non issue.

thanks for the info! As for the input shaft bearing, is this something that is readily available and fairly easy to replace? The wier part about the whining, is that it seems to disappear once i reach 4th gear.. I was listening to it a few minutes ago, while driving through town (30mph), and switching between 3rd and 4th , it comes/goes, depending on which gear..

To replace the input shaft bearing, the transmission needs to be disassembled. The bearing can be gotten from your friendly Nissan dealer.

Since the noise seems to change depending what gear you're in, other transmission bearings may also be worn.

Maybe you should just get another transmission; might be cheaper that way.

Thanks (again)

As far as clutches... Do I get a clutch for the K or SR trans? or are they basically the same? No, I don't know! :P
