Hey everyone...glad to be back at these boards

I lost my 240SX quite awhile back...but anyways

I'm getting ready to pick up a 95 200SX SE-R in a few weeks...so i just had a basic question

You probably know the SE-R comes with the SR20DE...well i was curious...how hard is it to turbo the stock engine

I've noticed that on some cars it's easier to swap the turbo version then try to turbo the basic version

That's basically all i'm asking...which is easier turboing a SR20DE or swapping in a SR20DET

I'm asking because i'm not knowledgeable about the differences between the n/a and turbo sr20's....if the internals are the same, different, etc.

Both are fairly easy to do with the B14. I personally prefer turboing the SR20DE. The SR20DE has 9.5:1 compression, which is a bit higher than the DET, but this makes for better power. It's still low enough where detonation is not a serious issue. I've heard of as much as 409 FWHP on a stock internal SR20DE!

If you are looking for turbo kits, there are 3 easy methods:

1) The best in most people's opinions, is to get the F-max turbo kit. http://www.turbo-kits.com/200SX_turbo_kits.html

2) Hotshot also sells a turbo kit which is similar in performance. Please check one of our advertisers for pricing on the kit.

3) You can use all the SR20DET turbo parts, such as the exhaust manifold and turbo, and simply make your own kit pretty easily.

Thanks a bunch!!

Just another question...the FMAX turbo kits....i notice there is a stage I and stage II

Any opinions on which to get...i'm looking for the most possible power on stock internals basically...

I noticed the stage II isn't a direct bolt-on...what exactly would i need to use it...sorry...i'm a little new to dealing with turbos

I'm looking to run 300-400hp on stock internals (crosses fingers) i'd also like to control my boost level...so any help there would be appreciated

The maximum psi I should run on an SR20DE would be nice to know to

If you are new to turbos, I'd recommend the stage I kit. Stage II is only for somewhere VERY experienced with turbos. I don't know exactly what you would need with the Stage II kit. I think you need some type of stand-alone fuel management system to run it, but I'm not sure.

Max psi depends on a lot of factors. Depends how well your car is tuned, as well as what octane gas you are running. I would say you could pretty safely run 10-12 psi without a problem though. Any higher than that will require more precisioned tuning and also will drop the reliability rate down.

I'd say the most you could possibly run on stock internals (given that everything is tuned to the gills, and you are running very high octane gas, such as race gas) then you may be able to run up to 20-22 psi on stock internals, however I strongly advise *not* to do that unless you are on the forefront of SR20 research :)

It also depends on what size turbo you are running. 20 psi on a T25 is different than 20 psi on a T88 :)

Wow thanks again!

One last thing...i'll stick with the stage I...but i noticed it says 8psi...can it be increased to say 10psi...or do i need a boost controller...and how hard would it be to install a boost controller etc

Why must turbos be so confusing...lol

I'd only run 12 psi max...but i'm curious how if the stage I kit has an adjustable boost...if not a boost controller will suffice if available

I don't know, you should really contact F-max for those questions. I also don't know what type of fuel management they are using, but if they say they only recommend 8psi, then I wouldn't go over 8psi without finding out why they don't recommend any higher.

Alright thanks...i'll look into it a little more later on...considering i don't even have the car yet

EDIT: I talked to FMAX...it seems the kit is capable of quite a bit...it comes with a boost controller and everything

The 8 psi rating is the most the turbo can run at with the stock ECU...so all i need is an upgraded ECU...the rep. was kind enough to give me a link to a company that makes upgraded ECU's for Nissan cars

Overall...it's a heck of a lot less complicated then i thought it would be...thank you Nissan!!! lol... Every other engine i've looked at turboing just became a nightmare...basically having to replace the entire engine

Yeah, the SR20DE is a very turbo-friendly engine.

I don't know what link the guy sent you, but I would recommend using a JWT ECU. The F-max kits *use* to come with the JWT ECU, I'm not sure sure why they stopped.

that's the exact ECU they recommend actually ;)
