the argument on why SR's are illegal boils down to this: the SR20DET was never intended for the 240SX in the US market. For an engine swap to be legal, the engine has to be an option for the chassis, but since only the KA24DE was offered for the 240 chassis, a KA24 is the only legal swap.

The only way to make it legal has been discussed mroe times than I care to count, but it comes down to this: nobody's willing to get it EPA and SAE rated. It's a long and expensive process to get the engine Ok-ed by the government, so no one has ever bothered with it.

the police don't know what's legal and what's not for the most part (i don't live in cali, so i don't know too much on this topic) but they usually send you to an inspector who does the visual to see if your engine's legit

an inspector?? well im not really planning to do too much street racing so if its a regular speeding ticket u guys think id be in much trouble? my plan is to get some new suspension so it'll be about an inch drop try and keep it as stock as possible if i do get the sr. they dont usally ask to look under the hood for a speeding ticket do they?also so if a car isn't supposed to have a motor as an option its illegal so y is this never a problem with chevy's ect. i've never heard anyone say they cant have a huge chevy 572 cuz its illegal dang rice rocket hatin' cops

a speeding ticket wont make him want under the hood, unless ur car looks like it. as far as the motor thing goes, cars that are 30 yrs old or more dont have to be smogged-get a 510, and the motor has to be sold in a car on us soil. a lot of ur q's on this have been coverd before

it's a newer motor in an older car, so i don't see why not. but then again, this pokes a hole in the the whole "had to be an option" point i've been seeing floating around

its legal, the ka24de was offered in a car in the us, u can put a 5-0 motor in a 240 and be ok, as long as all the smog equipment is there
