I wasnt really looking for one but i ran across this ad, http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/car/625516964.html . He said he would sell the engine for just $1800. He called me yesterday and said he would drop the price though since he is strapped for cash. I dont know if I want it though since he did say that it was in another 240 that he crashed. Also he said that it ran 12's which means it was probably beat on. And I know it doesnt have 50,000 miles on it, but what do you guys think. This is the first sr20 i have seen for sale in my area. I would rather just buy it from him then have to pay for one to get shipped. Im going to go look at it in a couple of hours so i will let you know how it looks in person.

Just about every single SR20 out there was beaten on. It's all about how well the previous owner maintained it. I'd rather buy a motor that I can check out in person rather than take a chance with buying from an online company. There's been too many horror stories.

I totally agree, if you can physically touch and see the engine in person i would probably sleep better at night. Go check it out, and good luck.

Just to keep you updated.. I didnt get to see it today but im going to go look at it someday during the week. He said he only wants $1200 for it so thats a plus, he also said that he replaced the head gasket with a metal one. He also said he has a 3in down pipe for it and a blitz intercooler, and greddy bov. So if it all looks good i should be buying it. Im going to take some friends with me though since i dont know much about cars. And also i dont have to send the wiring out since he already had it done for his s13. I'll update you all again once i go and try to take some pics. And thanks for the advice

Depends on the online source, I bought mine from JDM Source out of canada... they were awesome.. send pictures of actual motor, compression tested (which matched my test when I got it), opened valve cover and looked clean (little build up, but with 40K it should have a little)... harness was good, ecu, ignitor chip, etc.. everything I needed. I swapped oil pans (got the GReddy) and looked at bottom end, swapped out oil pickup (old one looked real clean)... again.. depends on the source.. if the source has been around for a few years, you can bet that they're decent to deal with (most forums would tell if they weren't... esp this one)... I also got a B-series for a Honda also.. top notch as well... If you call them, feel them out... they are 240 fans as well... As for buying an engine that A) was raced and B) in a wreck ... I would want to see it run first...

Good luck with your search...

Update: So i bought the motor for $1,000. He still has a blitz intercooler, greddy bov, 3in down pipe down to a 2.5 exhaust, 2in lowering springs/struts, boost controller and a safc II. Is another $1,000 for that a decent price?

1k for the extras sounds decentfor ballpark id say

blitz IC (w/ pipes) ~500greddy bov ~1503" dp w/ 2.5 cb ~350springs, struts ~400boost (mbc?) ~30safc II ~200

they are very ballpark i havent bought many of those things but have looked. adds to 1,630 so not bad. And do not be shy of a 2.5" exhaust, they can do plenty. Everyone preaches 3" but for sub 400whp I'd say 2.5" gets the job done.
