sr20 new starter, won't crank

I have a 90 240 with a blacktop SR swapped in. the transmission went bad so i pulled the engine out and replaced the transmission and the starter. when i put the engine back in it wouldn't start. it wouldn't even crank. i thought it might be the starter so i put my friends in and it started right up. so i got a new starter and now it won't start again. is there something special you have to do to new starters or am i just missing something?
