Okay so i've been replacing the trans in my s13 sr20det swapped zenki and i've hit a snag. after searching the forums i have only found vague references to a similar issue.

I have a s14 ka gearbox and an s13 sr bell-housing, when i put on the trans cover (plate around the input shaft) the transmission binds and wont shift into 3rd or 4th. with the plate off the transmission shifts through all gears and the input shaft spins freely. but with the cover on the shaft spins but wont go into 3rd or 4th and when you try to pop it in the shaft binds and the trans wont shift anymore.

I have noticed that this issue begins to get worse as i tighten the bolts around the plate.

My current guess is that the shift forks are hitting the plate when i put it on and some sanding possibly needs to happen. but before i went sanding away at transmissions someone might have some input on sr bell-housing swaps or the differences between s14 and s13 gearboxes in case i've missed something.

If I remember right the only difference between sr and ka transmission was a few inches and 1 bolt. I believe I trimmed the shifter hole in the floor and omitted one bolt. Its been years...tho.

As far as binding and why. Simply comparing the original and the new should make it easy. Maybe break out a dial caliper? Maybe im missing something on the story. Just make the new trans cover look like the old one right?

Sorry if that doesn't help.

Maybe you have a snap ring in the way or the needle bearing on the input shaft is cockeyed and making it sit long? Take it off and have a close look at it all and put it back on. It should be a snug fit, but not impossible.

There should be no differences between the gearboxes themselves. I've successfully swapped an SR bellhousing onto an S14 KA gearbox. You have something else going on. Probably your tail shaft housing knocked a fork forward, or you managed to lose one of the springs/checkballs somewhere.

I performed the above linked article using an S14 KA manual with an SR bellhousing.
