What would it take to put a sr20 6 speed trany in a ka powered 240? I know you'd have to bolt the bellhousing from the ka onto the rear case of the sr, but what about speedometer and the reverse lights switch? Niether of my cars have cruise control so all of the other switches on the transmission don't matter do they?

I've got 2 s13s, one is a 5 speed one is an auto.

what do ya think?

A Custom bellhousing. I'm not sure how different the input shaft is as well, but that's probably not hard to get around.

why a custom one? why not use the one of the ka transmission?

Because the main body of the transmission is likely different. So, even the 5-speed SR transmission and the 6-speed SR transmission do not use the same bellhousing.

the bellhousing is quite a bit different. whats pictured there is the S15 6speed.i don't have any pics of a KA transmission handy but i had them side by side once.i remember thinking that it would be damn near impossible to get it to fly i just can't remember my reasoning:(

"All the S13 trannies are interchangable whether you're doing SOHC to DOHC or AT to MT. It doesn't matter. For KA to SR, the flywheels are different as well as the clutch. The clutch for the SR can be used from the Maxima, not the KA. The KA's bellhousings are different from the SR's, the internals are the same (exception of s15 which has different internals and rest of the casing is slightly different as well)."

As 180fan said here in the post you linked to, NO. The S15 transmission is different. All S13 trannies are interchangeable, but will require different bellhousings. Note that the S15 is not an S13. Therefore the exclusively S15 transmission will not readily fit.

I read somewhere else on the boards a couple months ago about this kind of thing. It will probably cost you thousands to properly mount the S15 6spd. But if that's cool with you, go for it! Personally, I see very little wrong with the KA 5spd. Unlike some other engine/transmission combos, this one works pretty well.

I think, but am not sure, that the 6spd tops out at about the same speed as the 5spd. The gears are shorter, so you'll shift more, but instead of being in 5th at 75, you'll be in 6th. Again, I'm not positive, but that's what I understand of MOST 5 vs 6 gear trannies in the same car. (i.e. R32, 5spd and R34 6spd... relatively similar top speeds and acceleration, just an extra gear in the R34.)

As far as your reverse lights go, I'm not sure. Your speedo will be problematic because the speed sensor on the S15 is in the LSD (double check that) so you'll need the entire driveline to the differential, not just the transmission.

EDIT: Yes, the speed sensor is in the differential. Check this thread out.

just to bust your bubble, the KA has a broad torque band. the addition of a gear, with no increase in overdrive, [the 6th gear uses a ratio that is similar to the 5 speed.] will net you a loss.

the gear ratios in the 6 speed are tighter, but not taller.

the 6 speed will actually make your car slower.

your adding an extra shift, gaining no top end, and downgrading to a transmission with weaker gears than the 5 speed.

thats alot of money to spend on a downgrade. a heavy sub box in the trunk and pretending theres another gear after 5th is cheap and just as effective.

couldn't you just increase your final drive for more top end?....or would that be a decrease? whatever you see where i'm going with it.

the thing is that the SR has a narrower powerband than the KA. I think the S15 had 6sp b/c it has a narrower powerband than the S14 (I don't have graphs proving my theory). In addition, I think that Nissan kinda did this as a marketing gimic also.If you had a highly modified KA24DET I could see why you would want a 6sp, but I would DEFINATELY not recommend the weak S15 6sp for that highly modified torque monster.Keep this in mind. . . I'm 99% sure that the S15 6sp is the same as the Miata 6sp, and it's NOT meant to handle a lot of power.

actually my 70mph cruising rpm dropped significantly after installing the 6speed.if someone takes accurate MPH readings and compares them to RPM in 5th i'll do the same for 6th...it feels taller though.

you would want to decrease the numeric ratio, making the gears taller.

but changing the final drive ratio means changing the rear end, or at least the ring and pinion in the rear.

not sure who, if anyone, makes a taller rear gearset for an R200 differential.

the 3.545 out of an R34 GTR might work.

Nissan motorsports has different ring and pinion gears for the R200. If I can find my catalog, I'll post the available ratios.
