this happened to me when i did my chain a little while ago. I went by the marks. I counted teeth, but yet I ended up being 180 off. I pulled the CAS, turned it over 180 degrees and it fired right up.
I had backfiring out the intake. The reason why is because the car was trying to fire on TDC of the exhaust stroke, not the compression stroke. So the intake valve is opening as the spark plug is igniting, and occasionally something will ignite, causing a popping out the intake.
It took me two weeks of diagnosing, checking fuel pressure, changing plugs, changing out most electrical components (MAF ECU PTU, etc) to throw a hail mary out and rotate the CAS.
EDIT: just a side note. When your plugs get completely bathed in fuel, they won't ignite, hence no spark when your light is hooked up.
