i heard that if you rev a sr past 6k you run the risk of floating a valve and spinning a rod bearing. is this true?

well lets see? I rev the piss out of my SR s14 all the time hit 7300 rpm on the tell tell rpm readout on my Power FC. Have greddy easycams and I do this quite often. I have not had any trouble yet. Anything over 7400 or so is damage and I would say get a whole top end if you want to get into the 8000 rpm range. I do not think you will damage your head running it on the stock valve train up to 7400 rpm or so. My rev limit is at 7400 rpm. Take it for what it is worth -- I am sure other SR owners might have different opinions.

STOCK redline is 7500. Keep it under that and your golden.

alright thanks i appreciate it. because when i first got my sr i took it to 8k(dumb i know) and i spun a rod bearing but i think that the motorwas already messed up because when we took out the pistons they were dis-figured and when we drained the oil there was only about 2 quarts so that was probably why.

How could you take a stock sr and rev it to 8k-- did you have a chipped ecu or safc or something?

Yeah, it was probably the oil on that one. You should be able to get the bottom end to go past 10k, it's the valve train that is the limiting factor

Spinning a rod bearing happens when oil pressure gets low making the bearings rub the crank journals. Doesnt have anything to do with rpm. The lifters can float over 7500rpm from the lack of oil able to get inside the lifter. Also when revving over 7500rpm on stock springs, you can have the keepers that hold the retainer, spring, and valve together pop out making the valve drop down and get smashed by the piston.

All the ECU will do is raise the rev limiter. The SAFC is used to manipulate the voltage the ECU see coming from the MAF tricking the ECU to dump more fuel and create more power. Also to generally tune to get the AIR/FUEL correct.

My buddie has his head buitl and revs over 9,000 all the time. He has springs, retainers. Solid cam caps, lash adjuster kit, and solid lifters. I sure there is more to it. You can rev the SR pretty freely though, it is after all a inline 4. Just to be safe i would get some rocker arm stoppers. But a stock SR should be able to rev the SR past 6,000 regularly without any problems.
