I recently bought a 1993 silvia with a stock redtop sr20det that was suspected to have a bad turbo. The owner said that oil was blowing out of the turbo into the ic piping and intake, which caused the turbo to lock up? So I bought a !!NEW!! t28 as well as isis steainless oil lines and put it on yesterday. I finished it all up today, cranked it up, and its still doing the same thing. Its pouring out black smoke from the exhaust and filling up the ic piping with oil. Also, the cars runs very rough. All through the rpm's it spits and sputters and trys to die if I let off the gas. Any ideas?

How do you know the oil is cumming out of the turbo. Maybe its all the oil from the previous setup. Did you clean all the oil from the whole system there probably is oil in the intake and cylinders that's why it runs like s*** clean everything, and look if oil is coming from the new turbo or not.

I cleaned everything out and bought a new manifold. All the piping has been cleaned out except for the intercooler. Would oil get sucked up from the intercooler into the piping?? I didnt know if that much pressure was running through it or not? And I can take off my hot pipe and rev the motor and see oil coming out of the tube that comes off the turbo

If there is oil in the IC yes it would. How much boost are you running? That's how much pressure is running through it.

If it's a new turbo it's probably not spitting oil. You will run rich as hell if you do that (if it runs at all.) No harm though aside from possibly fouling out the plugs and excessive carbon build-up. Since you cleaned the IC piping pull the cold pipe off, swipe your finger around and see if it's still clean. Does it smell like your running rich? Black smoke typically means your running rich, burning oil is bluish white smoke.

Its running factory boost right now. I cleaned the pipes, ran the car and pulled the pipes back off and the oil was back. It is running very rich!! So I need to clean out the intercooler really good then see if its still doing it?

And another possible problem?? On the old turbo the oil return tube was on the bottom side of the turbo. On the t28 that I bought, its on the top. So the rubber hose runs up, between two manifold tubes then back down into the block. Could that be keeping oil from getting out of the turbo?

Here's a few picture. This one is how the oil return is running through the manifold and down into the block( the rubber line with the ziptie in the middle)

This one is the oil build up after running for 15 seconds and revving to about 2000 rpms.

UPDATE: I just cleaned out all the ic piping and the ic. I took the intake off to clean it and there is'nt any oil in there from the previous time that I cleaned it (hope thats a good thing?). So now I think Im going to put it all back together, change out my spark plugs and see what happens. Is there anything else I should do before I crank it up again?

EDIT: So I decided to crank the car up before I put everything back together. I started it and revved it to about 2300rpms two times. Turned the car off and look for oil again. For some reason oil is shooting out of the turbo where the ic piping connects to it, but its not coming out of the intake side anymore. Im pretty lost guys. I really dont want to put it all back together just to clean it out again!!I also changed the plugs. There was a thick black coating around everyone of them. Its running a lot smoother now though.

Before cranking the car

After cranking the car and revving to 2300rpms 3 times

The only thing I could think of there is too much oil pressure by the turbo oil inlet.

1 Check the oil pressure in the inlet.

IF OIL PRESSURE GOES HIGHER THAN 50psi AT THE TURBO UNDER LOAD than you are over oiling the turbo and you can blow your seals that would explain the oil in turbo problem.

I'm not sure on sr20det if there is a oil pressure reducing orifice i know that KA24DET have this problem and you need to reduce oil pressure with this "Turbo Oil Pressure Reduction Kit" you can buy it here http://jgsturbo.com/index2.html Hope this helps

Wow I cant believe no one said anything before all this after the pics. The oil return needs to be facing down, not up. That is your problem. Fix it before your new turbo is FUBAR.Also I believe the ISIS lines already have an oil restrictor in place, so ignore the previous poster for now.

Loosen the CHRA and clock the housings to however you need.

Wait..... How can you twist it if it has an internal wastegate?

I had the same thing when I bought my ebay turbo. It was clocked 180 degrees off, inlet was on bottom and outlet was on top.

1. Take off the wastegate actuator.2. Take off the 4 bolts holding the exhaust side to the CHRA.3. Take snap ring pliers and get the snap ring holding the compressor housing to the CHRA off.4. Turn the CHRA 180 degrees so that the oil outlet is now on the bottom. The wastegate mounts to the compressor side and the exhaust side, it never touches the CHRA. Since you are effective only clocking the CHRA, the wastegate mounting locations never change. Get out in your garage and look at it, once you realize what's going on you'll see.

Yeah, hopefully his seals arent shot from running it like that. I guess he will find out sooner or later...
