ok, i posted on here about two months ago asking for information about sr transmissions and what could possibly be wrong with mine. the post talked about how my transmission would grind like hell, occasionally, and the only way to stop it was to turn the car off. pressing the clutch, throwing it in neutral, nothing would stop it. when the car is in neutral, there is a very faint whining sound..press the clutch, and it stops. the most generic answer i got was, the throw out bearing was bad. so, seeing as how i've had the car for oh about 4 months now and im very anxious to get it on the street, the throw out bearing was only a $35-$45 fix. i dropped the transmission yesterday, and the throw out bearing was in good condition . even though its in the condition that its in, im still going to get a new one probably..but is there anything other than that, that could be doing this..and other than the pilot bearing. thanks, nick

sounds like the throw out bearing like you mentioned. Pick one up from the dealer. Replace the pilot bearing while you're at it. It should work fine after that.

the whining sound is pretty common for most 240sx transmissions it seems, don't quote me on that but I've experienced it a few times myself and have searched through a ton of threads for answers.

Grinding might be unrelated, but usually is a sign of worn or wearing synchro's or a gear missing a tooth or two.

in your position I would (and have) drop the transmission, inspect the torque on the flywheel bolts, replace the pilot bushing (which can be a PITA) and throwout bearing (note: replacing it with an OEM nissan gave me best results unlike the exedy TOB that came with my clutch)

Although I must say your transmission sounds likes its on its way out from your description.

Whats the mileage on the engine/trans?How is it treated? did you inspect the transmission internals?

the engine/trans both have around 55k to 60k miles on them, and it was treated like an everyday driver, and it sat for about a year and a half. now its in my shop and the trans is out and im doing the inspecting now. is it safe to inspect the gears myself, or have it done professionally?

Throwout bearings make noise when the clutch is depressed, not the other way around. What has likely happened is your main shaft bearings are bad. This is common because the shifter boot is prone to tearing and the trans fluid leaks out under aceleration and you run your trans low on fluid, thus killing the bearings. The only other thing it can be is the pilot bushing, but its not likely.

If its the Main shatf bearings, replace the trans which i would suggest anyway based in your other issues. I would also replace the pilot bushing while your there.
