How do you check the timing on an S13 blacktop motor? And also where does the temperature sensor for the gauge cluster plug in?

checking the timing's the same for all s13 and 14 sr's.

I do mine via the little black loop at the back of the coilpack harness.

Warm up the car first. When it's midway, kill the motor, go up front and disconnect the tps (you may not have to undo the - terminal but I do just a bit paranoid I guess). Start up your car again, set the idle to 800-900 rpm via the adjuster screw between your 2nd and 3rd runner or was it the 3rd and 4th... but yeah it's in there under your intake manifold runners.

put the timing light to your crank and check it. It should be 15 degrees BTDC, the second to the last mark on the right side if you're looking at it from the front of the car. When that's set, turn off the motor, reconnect the tps (again might wanna disconnect the battery). then you're good to go.

The temp sensor for the cluster? That sensor's next to your ecu's coolant temp sensor which is that one little harness that splits off into a Y and bolts to the valve cover on the passengers side towards the front of the motor. There are two plugs, one goes to the ecu temp sensor which is the 2 wire, and then there's the one for your cluster, the 1 wire. That 1 wire runs through the engine harness up to the little white plug that runs up next to your blower motor, up from your ecu.
