My starter is bad. I found the thread from a year ago on the subject:

zer...14101

But I'm wondering what definitive answers we've come up with since then? A lot can happen in a years time.

I know KA single and twin cam starters are the same, I took one off the 95 I had in my backyard and put it on my piggy back before the SR swap. It seems to be that you need the hitachi starter from the KA, and people are confusing the two different brands with the two different motors.

Anyway, what's up?

Haha, you said "piggy back". I have no answer to your query.

Which starter did you get? I just swap the head of the starters right? Which gear are you talking about?

I went to autozone and got a duralast starter. It did not distinguish hitachi v. mitsubishi so I decided to roll the dice. Turns out it was the right one, took maybe 5 minutes to swap the heads. Watch out for the KA head, it's not all one piece like the SR. I pulled it off and it fell to pieces haha. Works like a charm! And now I can use the plug for the starter again.

Think I should rub some dirt and oil on the KA starter head so when I bring it back for the core charge the head isn't pristine while the body and solenoid are black? Haha.

Possibly, the only way we'll find out is trial and error. I got lucky that I didn't get a mitsubishi starter, so I'm not sure. If you buy a mitsu and it doesn't work, take it back. It's only 2 bolts to find out if it works, and isn't rocket science to put it back together so don't be intimidated. If you take the heads off and they look the same, then you're good to go.

I don't know if the mitsu's are different, but my two starters had a big ring with gear teeth on the inside and then 3 little gears that sat in the middle of that (in the teeth of the big outer gear) and the head had 3 nubs that went into each of those 3 gears.
