SR Smoggable in CA Here's How

Hey guys, this issue has been brought up before alot. There's a way to do it.

1. Find someone who'll pass you visually.2. retard the timing 2 degrees3. find the stock downpipe, use stock muffler and oem cat.4. Stock airbox or if you're using an aftermarket one, cover up parts of it with a tshirt or towel or something (this one is trial and error for best results)

reason most aftermarket cats wont work is cuz they're only 2 way, don't have the 3rd scrubber for NOx. Your NOx count should be the one trying to screw you over, if everything else is gravy.

Passed a friends redtop SR with a good 60-70k on it with this method.

actually that #1 although a biggie, is easier to find than someone who'll just all out pass you. There was alot of discussion about if they'd pass in CA, and since all with SR's here don't have EGR's, the NOx was a biggie for the car worked on above. Initially it was floating around 2500-3k during the pretest, but after we got it to pass with about 2 points till it wouldn't. Although it's not a total solution, it's better and easier to accomplish than an all out pass. Trust me I've looked lol. Just trying to toss up an alternative for those of us in CA.

I was stopped by a CHP, looked under my hood... and gave me a ticket for my exhaust noise..

I had to goto a referee center and get it written off..

THEY looked at my engine and thought it was fine.. even with the cover saying "INTERCOOLED TURBO"

yeah alot of guys get away with the sr since it says Nissan and looks like it belongs there. Two guys I know got their cars impounded for racing but no tickets for the engines, and a few other guys got their cars ticketed for speeding but no ticket for the engine. So I think it'd be kinda hard to find a chp guy who know's what's up in those engine bays and to be able to pull one out saying "ah ha! you've got a sr20det and I know it's coming from Japan you illegal engine user you!". But yeah I get where you're coming from, it's still a gamble if you just happen to be unfortunate enough to get one that actuallly knows what should be in there stateside.

Forgot to mention that if you get an uptight cop or something, he will get faxed photos of the stock 240sx engine to his computer and then print it out to compare the picture with your engine. So if you don't have the stock KA in there...you're **** out of luck. One of the moderators on FA just got pulled over and fortunately he still had a ka in there. Cops actually printed out a picture of the stock ka engine and compared it with his. Also the moderator says that he has seen an asian cop that's been going around to a lot of those drift and car events to learn more about the 240sx(sr,rb,ca swaps) around the LA to OC area.

damn u guys in cali have it hard...i feel hella bad for you...the only cars cops really ever do that to here (and its RARE that they check your engine) is hondas...**** ive had TONS of cops look at my motor (ive asked them to just to see what they would say) and they said they saw NOTHING wrong with it

Yeah Alex got pulled over, but that was cuz of some undercover CHP dude at the show and was the dude was asking alot of questions about motors for the 240 and this and that. He got pulled over since that undercover pig was talking about his car and was the pig was asking to see under the hood, Alex said his car is a 5zigen car and that the exhaust is ok since it's under 95db but the chp radioed that other guy who staked out his car and sent faxes of stock engines for the 240 and blam ticket for headers and got sent to a smog ref. The next day he got busted by the same cop saying that he's ticketing him for not going to the smog ref and driving his car. Alex is trying to fight it right now though saying that what they're doing is harassing him for doing nothing wrong and is in the process of putting stock headers on his ride now.

Come to mississippi. It's 5 bucks for an inspection sticker and only the state trooper can ticket you for it. To get one you lights, horn, blinkers, and whindshiled washers have to work. Thats pretty much it.

Of course if the DE valve cover is the same it could be made to look very convincing.... You might be able to get a cover machined even. I've never really looked at a DE's cover though. Is the cover thick enough to be shaved down maybe?

Wow the PD is really getting way to involved in such a little matter. That time and effort would be better spent on catching serial murderers and stopping domestic violence than finding a questionable motor in a car (cmon, Nissan motor in a Nissan car, I really don't see the big deal and it's not like it "pollutes" gobs of pollution or anything). Cali does suck. I want to move to Florida. Same weather but hardly any smog and hotter women.

But it really pisses me off how much they care about stupid mindless **** like this. It's rediculous.

i've seen picture of the SR20DE valve covers......they're slightly different

and they're dull silver colored

i think the best thing to do is just get a used sr valve cover and strip off the paint.............btw, anybody know where to get used valve covers cheap?

Thats why i wish everyone would just lay low and chill with the whole sr craze. It really sucks when a redneck lawmen knows what motor you have. It really makes it hard to have an SR now.

ka-t is the best way to go, just cover up that turbo with some sheet metal and it'll look stock. and i wonder if it'll trick the cops if we also covered up the ic pipes with plastic pipes from the stock airbox and also have the stock airbox sitting there too.

have fun trying to get a hot pipe to route thru a stock air box...and what about the filter coming from the turbo??? think it out a bit further my young lad

Well i think u guys do stupid stuff on the road:( that wat u get pulled over for and then the POLICE see that aluminum intercooler it really stick out in ur face kind. Also alot of people have so much bling-bling on the engine bay like purple stuff from HKS... like me HKS stuff on my car

Thats why all my aluminum cooling stuff i.e intercooler and pipes, radiator and all colored back dont use regular paint, thermal paint its cheap get it from autozone or pepboys.

All u see on my engine bay are all black. Also keep the T25 setup make turbo below the manifold not on top. and just wrap it with thermal wrap. there u go STEALTH.

And by the way don't go to a CAR SHOW with ur sr20det power 240sx that is so dumb even honda with JDM swap engines getting caught in the parking lot of a car show. THAT IS SO STUPID
