Is my turbo going bad, or do all redtop stock turbos sound like a lower-than-typical "whurring" sound while spooling?

I've sat in other different turbo'd cars (WRX, VW 1.8T, etc.) and they've all had the usual high-pitched spool sound.

Might be the type of filter and intake tube on it. You can hear my friends CA spool up a mile away on a SR T25. Mine never sounded the same with the same set up but diffrent intake filter.

i have an Apexi intake and man, the spool is beautiful. I have a video of me racing my friends Tiburon. There's a wind-like sound but the camera was inside the car (turbo spooling loud as hell). Ppl say my car sounds like locusts.

also, it depends on the exhaust. take off your cat back and you just easily hear the turbo whine and whistle.

the flutter sound would be when he drops the throttle if it was compressor surge... If it flutters on acceleration and boost up then it can't be compressor surge.

I know c.surge can happen on trailing throttle if your bov is set too high, but according to this it sounds like it can probably happen if you try to run 15psi on a sidemount. or something. i dunno, this is what i read________________________________Courtesy of NissanPerformanceMag.com.

The compressor map also has an important landmark, the surge line. The area of compressor surge is a line bordering the islands on the far left side of the map. Surge is when the air pressure after the compressor is higher than the compressor can generate. This causes the airflow in the compressor wheel to back up and stall. This, in turn, causes the pressure to drop, allowing flow to resume until it stalls again. In severe surge this can become a violent oscillation that destroys the thrust bearing of the turbo and can even cause mechanical failure of the wheel. Surge can feel like anything from a slight fall off in power to a violent jerking when driving. Surge also makes a thrumming or chirping noise that can be distinctly heard over the engine. You'll often hear compressor surge during shifts, if the compressor bypass valve (or blow-off valve) is too small. Obviously surging any time other than during a shift is not good stuff, so any compressor match should avoid crossing over or dwelling in the surge area of the map especially after the wastegate opens.___________________________________

corey, you said tho your compressor wheel is able to be moved about a bit, it's likely rubbing the housing a little once in awhile. You shouldnt be able to feel the turbine move in/out at all, a little L/R is ok but if you can move it in and out more than like 1 or 2mm its soon to be toast. Got a budget for a GT2871R?

You can buy turbo rebuild kits but theres no way to make sure its balanced or flowing properly when youre done. phoenixturbo has a rebuild service, but if you want to just replace it id look for a gt28r (aka d potato, as per s14sr) or 2871 for , something bb for longevity and response.

when i had my blitz lm intake on my sr, i could hardly hear the turbo spool and hardly hear the intake suck air in. so i decided to buy a enjuku racing intake system and now the t25 spooling sound is loud and the intake sound is more noticeableOh yeah, the stock rubber intake hose sucks is POS, its a good investment to get a aluminum one.
