Are SR-20DET swaps legal in Cali. Im trying to go back home in like a year or 2. I live in Germany and i want to swap my KA24DE for an SR20 But I don't want to do it if I can't register the thing in Cali. the car is american spec. So the body has no problems getting in but what about the engine after I swap it? Will it even get registered or is it just going to be an emission problem that I'll have to pass the test?

SR20DET swap isn't legal in any state. It's a JDM engine, and was never produced in the states. It will not pass emissions. BUT if you can get it registered in a county that doesn't do testing.. I don't live in Cali, but I heard there's places in Northern California that doesn't having testing.

SR swaps are definitely not legal in california, but you can register the car fine, but no egr valve=no smog check, but if you know someone that will bend the rules for you, or are willing to pay extra(read:bribe) than you'll have no problems, just dont get a front mount intercooler and dont hotdog on the streets and get attention.

p.s. Whats with the gay attatchment?

Now what if I were to bring the vehicle into the state from out of country with the engine already in it? The swap wasn't done in California so the swap isn't illegal right?

have fun importing a car into cali lol.. that's going to be a bit expensive, and time consuming... just do the swap, and be careful.. or turbo your KA, and leave all the emissions, and you will probably pass.

why do you keep attaching the picture? if you need help on how to make it in your sig, just ask.. did you draw it?

importing a non USDM car from any country is the same procedure. to be legal, you need to go through an RI and an ICI, and they have to make it EPA and DOT/NHSTA safe to US spec for the year of the vehicle

however, if it *is* a USDM vehicle, then you shouldnt have any huge problems(the one caveat on that is california, arnold doesnt like anything, so prepare for taxes)

id guess the simplest way to tell would be get your VIN, call your US insurance agent and see if they will insure that VIN ... then call the DMV near where you plan to live, see if that VIN is registerable

once all that is done, you may find that you have to get a PO box in nevada (outside of vegas, reno, sparks, carson city there is no emissions or inspections minus a VIN check to make sure the vehicle yo drive is the one you registered) and register it in nevada

take what you want from that, the results of my research and trying to import my silvia to the US last year

do what my buddy jon did, you may think it's a hassle but, keep a running KA in your garage, once a year swap it back into the car for emissions etc, then after that just put the SR back in...

importing a silvia/180sx isn't too bad. they go for like nothing over there... lots of them come loaded with goodies too (stuff that makes a difference... not like the aluminum wings, cheap quality apc...) and their cars are really low mileage...

that sig is hot... it has like 20 degrees positive camber...
