I need your help making up my mind. I have been able to get my hands on some money...enough to do an SR swap, but nothing else (i.e, coilover suspention setup, poly bushings, LSD...you know, "the wish list". So, it's either going to be one or the other.

The donor car is an S-13 Hatch. It is mechanically sound, but it DOES have 125,000 and change.

The way I see it, the SR swap needs alot of cash up front, and this could be the one shot I get at it in awhile. The rest of the stuff I could beg, borrow or steal a few pieces at a time. Do I do the SR swap first, or am I just being stupid?

Buy it. Drive for a week, then get SR.

You will love it when you get it, then you will love it a million more times over when you get SR.

well just remember that there are always unexpected costs with anything used. I'm delaying install of my sr until summer time as i've decided to buy more parts that'll be going in all at once than to keep taking parts off and thus further trouble me. Some of the stuff I've ran into that I wasn't anticipating was the cost of all the gaskets. So far i've already torn down the entire engine replacing gaskets and cleaning as I go. Awaiting install is a greddy metal headgasket as it'd be a pain to get to once the engine is in. Additionally, the clutch, the strengthened bolt for the throwout fork, motor/transmission mounts, and further service of parts already worn out that I'd like to have replaced around the time of the sr has made for a delay in the time that the sr's going in. Just a my method though, as I'm on a limited budget but at the same time I'm not about to rush through anything as important (or costly) as a motor swap. but that's just me.

180: You make some good points. The thing I am trying to avoid is doing anything half-assed.

HyJynX: Mostly as a daily driver, but I do plan on keeping it as a pet project, hopefully for quite awhile. Although the way it looks now, it will be a daily for the next 2 years.

I think I'm just a little overanxious to get an SR in...even before the car is really ready for it...kinda like "maybe they will be all out of SR's in 2 years"

180: I think if I really had my way, I would get the motor, rebuild it over the course of a few weeks/months/as long as my wife will tolerate having japanese engine parts laying around/ and put that into a fully reconditioned S13.

Although I could just be an idiot. Who knows.

nah you're not an idiot man. Yeah I'm pretty anxious about dropping the sr into my car too, but I'm not about to risk a pretty expensive investment just to anxiousness. A buddy of mine went and rushed his and cost him a fortune in the long run to get it to work properly. I'm not about to do it that way. Get it right the first time is my deal and I don't want alot of trouble later on so all the gaskets go along with a bunch of cleaning. I love my car and I've always said I'd try to give it the best I can and methodical cleaning and replacing of gaskets from an engine that could have bad gaskets and ensuring that everything is torqued to spec and everything that needs replacing gets replaced on a pretty notorious engine is just another way of me ensuring that promise I've made to myself and my car. Good luck to you about convincing your wife though, my girlfriend would kill me if I had engine parts lying around. Ha ha ha.

180fan, thats exactly what im doing, ive got my motor sittin on my porch right now, im not planning on dropping it in until febuary....theres alot of stuff i want to replace and put in all at once with the engine, like- metal head gasket, rocker arm stoppers, new water pump, upgraded clutch, fuel pump/filter, fmic, koyo radiator etc etc....

theres a long list of stuff to go with it, i figure its alot easier to do it all at once and take your time doing it, i want it to run just like my stock motor ran(but alot faster of course), b/c i know alot of people around here who have motor swaps, and their cars are in the shop or on rollbacks more than they are on the road driving.

thats another reason why i decided to take it to a shop that does sr20 installs instead of me and my friend putting it in, itll be more money but if it gets done right itll be worth it IMO

but then you'll have a fast, expensive car that can niether turn nor stop. something to think about. it stopped me from getting my CA swap. im gonna be putting 1400 into the suspension, and that isnt even coilovers. but eh, u wont need that kind of setup for daily driver, so i guess i'll shut up now.. :-/-Enzo

I'm with S86d... Smarter to build the suspension and everything up before going for the motor. You'll appreciate that power increase more when the car is capable of handling it correctly
