i have a 1990 240 hatch, so i was wondering if an sr20det or a ca18det would be an easier swap. i know the ca18det came in that same year in japan, so would it be set up better in that "generation" of 240? how hard is it to swap in a ca18det? do the stock motor mounts match up?

They both will fit and both doesn't take a rocket scientist to make work in that chasis. It all boils down to personal preference. Our opinions will lean more to the CA, so I suggest you do a bit of reading from both forums and find out what best suits you. Don't ask for comparison between the two because we've played that scene too many times and I personally don't want to have to be a part of another CA vs SR debate even if it's just chasis related. I'll leave your thread open, but don't get the community rumbling about the CA/SR issue or it will get locked. Good luck in your selection................

If you don't plan on hyping it up, you may want to lean towards the SR (ooo that hurt to say that ). Seriously, if you just want a taste of JDM power under your hood, save some dollars, and like an engine that's relatively easy and cheap to repair, then I'd say go CA. But if you want some low end torque, a little bit of power through the mid power band, then I'd say go the boosted KA route. But if you want jdm power, popularity, and a huge aftermarket spectrum, then I'd say go with the coca-cola engine , I mean SR20DET. They all suck on fuel, but the CA is the smaller of the bunch, that is nothing to turn your back on either. Once again, personal preference. Hope this helps.

My swap is still in the works, but i have alot of confidence in my motor. Another member ( Nismofyre) and I intend on producing 400-500 whp. So choose carefully.

Building a high HP bulletproof CA18 is much harder than building an SR to the same power level.

I could have chipped the ECU, got a bigger turbo and used stock internals in an SR20DET to match the power of my worked CA18DET for half the price. I'm legally limited to 1800cc/turbo in my car, that's why I like the CA18 :-)

I'd recommend the SR. But I'm in Australia where we got the S14 and S15, so we have a good local supply of parts, on top of the volume of Japanese import engines, and the never ending supply of aftermarket performance parts.

The SR20DET has some downsides, but it's a damn good engine for a street car.

My old man gets 156kW at the wheels from his SR20DET, and gets a reliable 7.3L/100kms (38mpg), with 80:20 split of city/freeway driving.

The SR20DE-NEO is also a good engine, from the S15 non-turbo Silvia. 98kW at the wheels, with bags of torque, is still not hanging around.

The SR responds more readily to basic bolt-ons so if you are just goofing around than the SR would be the better choice. If you intend to wring the motor like it said something about your momma than the CA is a more solid base.
