Im lookin to get an SR before the winter is over but i dont know weather or not its worth getting it done professionally of doing it myself. i was wondering how hard it is to install. i have a 90 240 and heard you need a 91-94 power steering pump and hoses. the only part of the install im worried about is the wire harness switch. is it difficult to do and do you need to wire in anything special like reroute different wires? or will it just set right in. any info will be nice thanks

I've heard it's really easy, but you have extend a few wires across the engine bay.

Check out http://www.srswap.com for info.

Dude, I'm going to have to suggest that you do it yourself. It is not that hard to do a S13-S13 swap. I would have never thought I could do it but I have done the complete swap in my garage with the help of a few buddies and common hand tools. I repeat, common hand tools. I lifted out the KA and dropped in the SR and all accessories with common hand tools.

It was nice to have an engine hoist. As far as the wiring I just sent mine to Jeff and Yury and they took care of it. I still have to crank the car but the worst part of the whole swap was when my two buddies poored gear oil in the transmission without the speed sensor in. Thats right, I got two quarts of gear oil on the floor of my garage and it was not pretty. It was a BIATCH!!!

As far a the power steering, my engine came with the resovoiur. I took the high pressure line off my car and went to a local shop that builds power steering lines. They cut the '89 line right after the part that goes over the cross member and then put a 12" line with fitting on the end up to the pump. Cost me $30 and is event better looking than the DOHC lines.

there are two major issues you will run into if you do it yourself. The wiring harness will need to be extended in order for the plugs to fit properly and mount the ECU on the correct side of the bay. The other issue is that you have to get power steering lines to fit your car. You'll need 91-93 PS lines and pump to fit along the crossmember. That's a junkyard trip away.

The harness isn't a big deal if you know what you're doing. I personally do not, but my engine was swapped in when i purchased the car. The guy that had done the swap used the original KA harness and added the wiring for the coil packs (that's the major difference between the KA and SR harnesses). Other than that, the engine bolts directly in.

Minor issues include that the heater hoses will need to be rearranged to fit the US heater core inlets on the firewall. The radiator hoses will need to be changed around if you keep the US radiator in. If you get a japanese radiator, then that won't be a problem, but if you stick with the US radiator, you will need to go with an electric fan upfront because you won't be able to add the crossover lines in with the fan shroud in the way. Also, I believe the tachomoter will need to be swapped to a newer tach as the SOHC tach can't read the DOHC signal.

http://www.SRswap.com

this is all the info you'll need. if you don't think you can do it after reading that page then i'd suggest having a shop do it. anything they don't mention on that page is more or less common sense and can easily be worked through with a little thinking :D

yo man, i don't know about you, but when taking a test in school i would much rather make an B on a really difficult networking exam than having somebody log on my user account and have them make the A for me. I mean yeah, it's real nice to have an A, but it's even nicer knowing that you know the subject and understand it enough to make a decent grade. This relates to me and my sr swap..if i had somebody install an sr20det professionally..sure it would be nice to get it done 100% right and "make the A", but then you think to yourself "i just took the easy way out and have learned nothing." That's why i took the route of installing the motor myself, it might not be the prettiest swap or the most correct, but i did it, i get credit for it.

enough of my rambling :P..It wasn't very difficult to get everything going..you can get it going pretty easily, but get it going the right, and correct way, it may take a little while. The wiring is probably the toughest part of the swap just due to the time consumption and the frustrations when it still doesn't crank. Also, having these forums are a great deal of help..All you really need is http://www.srswap.com and a few friendly people on NICO..hollar!

Tenkawa,

I live in Roanoke too. I am going to be installing my SR in the next few months (Pick up my engine the first weekend in January) I would love to see your car sometime. I see you had jay install your engine. I have talked to him several times at the Z-Doctor. Good guy. Let me know a way to get in touch with you sometime if you don't mind

Thanks
