hey there,

when doing the SR swap, what gauge cluster do most of you prefer to use, the KA one or the SR one? I want the best performance possible and if KA cluster limits performance or vice versa i'd like to know. any help or advice is appreciated.

The cluster has nothing to do with performance. The KA will have the improper redline.

I prefer to keep the KA cluster and swap in the SR tachometer. That way I can tell how many miles my car has and I have the proper redline.

I was thinking of doing this when it comes to the tach. What about the speedometer? Will the KA's speedometer be accurate or close to accurate?

I use my whole KA cluster, including tach. The printed section of the redline is incorrect, but I know my redline is about 7700 where the rev limiter is. I just shift at 7500 when driving hard, tach goes to 8000. I don't know about the rest of you, but my tach is reading entirely accurate, even if the printed redline is wrong. I've tested with one of those aftermarket tachs and they are both the same.

My KA speedo is also accurate. I am using my KA's speed sensor.

I have a 180sx Tach. Km/H. Tach is right, but it's going to take some getting used to, to figure out what mph I'm going when I'm looking at the KmH.

u shift at 7500rpm? the power curve is going down at like 6200. but i like the jdm one more, but thats just cuz of the correct redline and saying how many km/h i was going :)

Yes, I know the power falls off, but staying in gear longer also has it's benefits. Also, the power doesn't fall off too bad, it seems more like it is leveling off and drops a little more around 7100. 7500RPM in second gear reads out to be 70mph, which is great for hopping onto the freeway.

when i took my car that high in rpm, it just felt like it didnt like it very much, whats the point of staying in gear if youre not accelerating as much as u could be if u shift?

My SR has cams (264/264), so it still makes power up there and only falls off for boost reasons.

My car pulls all the way through 7500. Why change gears at a lower RPM? Even though the power is trailing off by 7500, the power produced at that level is still higher or equal to the power that will be produced in the next gear at its lower RPM. Not to mention that when you shift, your not accelerating. When people race KA's, do they shift at 4400 RPM's because thats where the peak torque is, or 5600 RPM's where the peak HP is at?

With the lightened flywheel I have no choice in the matter. The SR spins up so freakin' fast that I am shifting to keep up.

Back on topic-I use the KA cluster and adjust my thinking when shifting but I will say that there is a guy on FA that will adjust the SR cluster to read in mi/hr through ingenious calibration and electrical manipulation.

So, who here wants a 180mi/hr speedo with the propper tach:ylsuper

what im trying to say is that when i took my car up that high, it didnt feel like it was doing anything anymore, and when i shift it pulls harder, or seems to at least
