I can't believe it. I never would have thought a low compression motor could fail so miserable on NOx! It was at 3000ppm and allowable is only 1000ppm. Anyone have a cat they want to donate?

new catalytic converter won't do anything to your NOx. That's handled by your EGR and high combustion chamber temperatures. I can attest to that because that's why my KA is failing right now, because of NOx and yes I've put in a new cat and it didn't do jack for my NOx. Yes I am also well aware that your sr doesn't have an egr on it if you managed to fit it to a usdm chassis.

You'd be surprised how many cars I've passed with hollow cats or test pipes.

As for the cat, I know it won't reduce the NOx. But I am hoping that if I richen it up, retard the timing, and use the cat to burn up the little bit of rich mixture I can get the thing to pass.

Sounds like a plan to me. Have a look at the Nissan online mechanic section and you can see what I've gotta go through to battle NOx. Maybe it'll give you more ideas too.
