ok so my sr would cut out sometimes, but i ignored it like a moron.yesterday it was real bad.cut out as in...it would just kinda not go anywhere..(batt. light was on) and it just had no juice (wipers slowed down)..i pop my hood today and the main wire to alt is DONE! just fried right off...thats why my car would just die..running off straight batt. is this from alt frying it up?? or too much amperage going through that wire? im very confused.alt. fuse is unharmed..but the wire was burnt competely off..and so was the bolt on the back of alt connecting the wire..

any ideas or tips would be grreat.thanks in advance

Check the diodes in the alt. with a diode testing mult-meter.

ill add that to the list.but if diodes are bad(failed) that would cause that wire to burn p like that? or that would cause too much amperage to come through that wire??

If the diode didn't reverse bias it could send to many amps through the wire and cause it go get hot and melt or whatnot. Are your terminals clean and the wire is clear of excessive direct heat?

I had that exact problem with my sr alternator and im willing to bet its going to be your diodes. All of mine had gone bad and i was frying power wires. Im not sure about you, but around where i live there in a guy who rebuilds alternators. I had him rebuild mine for like 75 dollars. just be sure to tell them what kind of alternator it is, they can usually get parts for it.

You could either get it rebuilt or try finding/pricing a new diode board.

You might as well just upgrade that wire while you're at it. Beef up the alternator wire and the 2 other wires for the Big 3 and you should be happier.
