just hit 108k in my 97 240 and now that its summer, when my car warms up and i hit like 5000 rpm, i hear a really bad squeel. any ideas what the problem is? i heard it could be the timing belt? if it is, any idea on how much it is to replace? or any performance suggestions while im fixing the car in that area.... thanks

Try tightening the belts. While you're in there look for any piglets that may have crawled up in there.

We got timing chains.Check the condition of your belts and tightness. How clean is your engine bay?Something could be dropping on your belt making it squeal.Or one of the dvices attached to your belt is locking up a little. My friends DSM his power steering pump was dieing and making his belt squeal 1 week l8r his pump is toast.

i like working on my car but my mom would kill me if i really did engine work like the belts. she freaks out when i change my oil or install my intake. i do have the chilton's manual though. ill check in there. any tools reccomended or gaskets ill have to replace by checking my belts? also, CURIOUS ABOUT FIXING THE BELTS AND UPGRADING PERFORMANCE. anything i could do performance wise while doing a simple maintenance repair?

Just a basic inspection. Make sure everything looks good. Nothing cracked or warped. Belt replacement is easy and there is little risk to it. A good thing for a learning experience. Inspect your fan clutch.Inspect wiring and wiring insulation on the engine.Inspect spark plug wires.Inspect rotor/cap.Inspect coolant hoses, both to the radiator and into the cab. They should be firm, not mooshy or swollen.Inspect radiator overflow.Inspect coolant condition.Inspect air filter. You know... the basics.
