OK has this happened to anyone else? I have had the car for about 3 weeks now driving it solid the whole time with no problems. Then today on my way into work I was going around a corner and heard a squeal like a power steering belt slipping. Then I heard the same thing going in a straight line. I noticed it only did it when the engine hits 4000 rpm. So I babied the car home and took my truck back to work. Any ideas what is going on? The only thing differant from ysterday to today is it was the hottest today its been since I got the car (over 90) but I don't think this would do it. I mean that is literally the ONLY thing differant from yesterday to today.

if your belts are loose or dry rotted this will happen... push on the top part of any of the belts where it goes horizontally from one pulley to another, if you can push with a bit of force and deflect the belt 1/2" or more its probably way too loose, and you will need to tighten it via the tensioner. theres one on the PS pump, the alternator, and an idler pulley for the AC belt.

if its dry rotted, the rubber part of the belt will be very hard and the groves will be cracked and split apart

Does the sound happen only in motion or while free-revving? That info would help alot.

*scratchin head* ok i just got back in...belt doesn't seem loose nore does it seem to be dry rotted actually seems fairly new.

anyway i took the car out so i could check the free rev (didn't think neighbors would like me reving to 4k at 1am). so i took the car out to some back roads. well it didn't do it on a free rev OR while i was moving now. wtf?

any ideas why it would stop doing that? i had stop the car and started again earlier but it kept doing it. no there is no sign what so ever...the thing is running strong revs up fast pulls all the way to 5k....i'm damn confused

if its wet or really humid outside that will *help* it slip alittle... if you have ever been in someones car that needs it tightened when it rains and they start it up it squeals like crazy

Did you check the tension of all the belts?

It sounds like a belt thats either bad, loose, or wet (oil or coolant)

And the tempurature just allowed the belt to stretch enough that the pre-existing problem became noticable.

fan clutch? a wearing fan clutch wont make noise all the time, like when its cool at night. try spinning the fan by hand when the car is off and if it spins fairly easily it could be wearing down.

i have squealing at 4k while driving and during free rev at about the same rpms, in my case it's my timing chain, check that, could be the problem
