Everytime i start my z i have a loud squeal, if i rev it up it goes away. Sounds like a belt squeal but i tightened the belts. How tight should they be? any other reasons that would make the belt squeal?

Not sure what the deflection should be but you should be able to find out in the manual
http://300zx-twinturbo.com/cgi-bin/manual.cgi

If you dont know how to check deflection, you hold a rigid item, meter stick or the like over two pulleys, press the belt in at the center and measure how far it pushes in, thats your deflection

As far as other sources for the squeal im not sure, but would love to hear what other solutions the veterans here have, btw did u try the no-squeal belt treatment spray?

well right now the belts only move 1/4" back and forth, they are brand new, and i dont feel the need to spray them. On the crank pulley should there be a key? i know there is one for the timing belt gear, but i dont have one on the crank a**. pulley just the bolt. and i am only running 2 belts alt. /water pump and power steering.

The power steering belt should be 1/2" deflection and the others 1/4" deflection. If they are brand new Nissan OEM belts you do not need any spray. There is a key for the crank pulley. Try taking one belt off at each time to narrow down the squealing. It could be that one of the accessory items is siezing up and won't let the belt turn it properly causing your squeel.

Are you using OEM Nissan belts or aftermarket? I just had the same problem with my alternator belt. I tightened it but it still squealed but it was in good condition. After a while of thinking i figured it was possiblity that the belt was to big. I bought a OEM belt and matched the two up and i was right. The aftermarket was about a inch to big. Thats why when i adjusted my belt i ran out of adjustment and it never tightened fully. When i installed the OEM belt i still had plenty of adjustment left over and it tightened like it should. No more squeal. Hope that helps.

same thing happened to me and as i was going down the road my alternator belt snapped.... i would look into replacing the belt and resetting the tensioner

P.S. the size of the belt is 4 grooves and 40 inches long correct??
