Hey all,

I started my car this yesterday, and it started squealing... I assume it's the belt... Does anyone have any suggestions? It was really loud, shrill, squealing, and it would come on most times during low speeds or cornering.

I have 123,000 km on the car, just wondering if the belts are due for changing. I think so.

Should I look at some underdrive pulleys before I get the belt? Or is that an easy swap for later?

Thanks ya'll.

Grant,

I am not sure what the weather loks like now there but if anything close to what we have here than don't be surprised. We have around -25 this week. Takes about 2 minutes driving around -20 to smothen up the shifting and steering. It feels lot stiffer to shift and turn the wheel. If you are using your G every day and it only does it at the start in this cold you should be ok for a bit more but if it does it every start up than it is time to change the belt.

Also I think it is ment to change @100k. Could be wrong.

Not familiar with the under drive pulley set but if you go with a diferent diameter you might have to get different size belt.

Belts are cheap...I'd just replace it now or do the underdrive setup.

Yeah, I think I might replace it myself for now, I know it's over due... And with my stereo, I don't think I will go with underdrive pulleys, maybe just lightweight down the road.

zozo, I did notice it seemed to happen the day after I washed my car... I thought it may be due to some water that made its way onto the belt, but it's not going away, so I'll just swap it...

I'm going to do a quick search for threads on belt changes on the G, this will be my first belt replacement. How long should this take? I will plan to do it on Saturday. I know that some cars have a belt tensioner, I could try that first, but if it's exceeding 0.8" of play after tensioning it will need to be replaced.

Telcoman changed his, wonder if he did up a writeup...

If you have more than 500watts, I would not do the underdrive setup. If I turn up the subs, my car actually slows down due to the current draw on the alternator. The yellow-top Optima and the 1F CAP help, but it's still there.

My thoughts exactly Probably look into doing the lightweight pulleys when I put in my electric fan...

Hw long has it been since you changed your belts? I change mine every 20-25K miles if they last that long.

With cold weather I notice that the belts are more prone to squealing. Once the car is warmed up and the belts are warm they don't slip and squeal. You can probably just get by simply by readjusting the tensioner.

BrandAidDesign:

I replace my belts every 30 K - 40 K whether they look good or not. 100K is a lot of risk to take on a belt. In fact, i could sell my old belts and still get tsome change for it. Belts are cheap form Infiniti delearship---somewhere between $60 - $80 for the whole set.

If you must go with after-market pulleys, please get stock diameter pulleys and please go with UR---UR is known internet wide and in automotice circles for the lightweight pulleys. UR makes lightweight stock diameter pulleys. I think the three pulley set cost about $400.

And then, do not take the pulley to be installed by any mechanic--if it is done improeprly or wrongly, it can mess up your engine. So, take it to an infiniti dealership and see if they will be willing to get it installed. Pulleys must align properly and torqued properly for them to work as designed.

Nope, not I!

You must have me confused with someone else?

I wonder who that could be?

I still have my original belts. I inspect them at every oil change when I remove the fiberboard shroud. After 24 oil changes and 78k miles, the belts still look fine.

John, I'll check the manual and see if I can tension it for now, you're right though, it's time to change, I've been driving the G much less, and it's been sitting around more than I'd like due to weather.

Jacko,Good advice, I know you can get more power with underdrives, but I have no plans to remove my subs, until I hit the track, so I think that I'll be looking into lightweight UR pulleys, thanks bro.

Telcoman,I thought you did one, perhaps SVT, but anyway you're the man just because. Thanks guys
