Hey,

I have a 1996 Nissan 240sx and my brakes recently started squeaking (most notably the front passenger side, but I think some of the others do too). I had the pads replaced about 1 year ago at a local shop. I don't drive especially hard, but I suppose there is a chance they could be wearing down. They typically squeak when the brakes are cold (it'll stop after a few firm brakes), and at about 1/4-3/4 brake pressure.

Any ideas on what this could be? I'm going to get my oil changed in a couple of weeks, so should I get the pads replaced or at least looked at as well?

Thanks!

Could be the pads, could be the shims. It's nothing major, though you should probably get a brake job one way or another.

Its likely the other shop did not perform the brake job properly or used non OEM pads. A lot of the hole in the wall shops like pepboys, midas and other dumps like that discard the shims, apply a rubbery compond to the back of the pads, or some other lame a$$ procedure that really does nothing for silencing the pads when a slight to moderate glazing exists. If you dont have factory pads and hardware on it, its time to step up or get used to squeeky brakes. Also it is best to use PBC between the pads and the shims to help deaden the pad vibration when your brakes are applied[ this is your squeek]
