Yes, it is good to replace the shims when replacing pads ... not a hard and fast requirement (well, the manuals say to do it), but best to do so ...bfsn5452 wrote:I am using the shims that came with the car. Should I replace the shims.
The hawk pads you are using are high frictions pads which has a tendency to squeal under braking. It's just the material they use and if the noise bothers you then just go back to OEM pads and shims.bicsintegra wrote:my brakes squeal sometimes also i have hawk pads and some ebay cross drilled and slotted rotors, i will try replacing the shims and see if that works.

Its not the slotted rotors by themselves, more the hard ceramic pads and slotted rotors being chewed up. At least that is what I experienced with hawks and DBA rotors. This was one year in and a daily driver.gbinkster wrote:i dont think it has to do with slotted rotors. My car, from the previous owner, had new pads and oem (i believe) rotors installed at pep boys. Squeeling like crazy at a slow stop. Dont have $200 atm , so should i buy new pad from pep boys? Or maybe check if the shim is on, or if i should replace only the shim???
