Last November I did my first brake job new (pads and rotors). I put some cheap pads and standard rotors, I don't even remember the name of the brand. The brakes were squeaky and annoying. This past weekend I decided to try it again, but this time I purchased Ceramic EBC pads, and standard Weaver rotors. I put some lubrication (Anti Squeal)on the caliber lips and on the back off brake pads. At first I thought it was the cheap brake pads, now I think it’s something I am doing wrong. Suggestion anyone.

Are you using the OEM shim kit. Aftermarket shims in some cases will still cause noise.

I am using the shims that came with the car. Should I replace the shims.

Yes, it is good to replace the shims when replacing pads ... not a hard and fast requirement (well, the manuals say to do it), but best to do so ...

Well the shims did not work. I went to the dealer, and purchased the shim kit. I AM STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM! Any more suggestion, anyone.

The hawk pads you are using are high frictions pads which has a tendency to squeal under braking. It's just the material they use and if the noise bothers you then just go back to OEM pads and shims.

i just bought my 06. its a beauty, but squals when im stopping slowly. Totally kills my game as people stare at the car, lol. What do the shims look like. The previous owner told me the pad and rotors are only a few months old and have been squeeling since he got the car back form Pep Boys. Maybe they left out the shims

Two things I noticed with brake squeal on my M. I used EBC slotted rotors and Hawk ceramics, the car squealed no matter what I did including adding anti-squeal rubberized compound, OEM Shims and grease. I went back to OEM rotors and non-ceramic pads and the squeal went away. I suspect that the rotors plus ceramics where the reason here. I understand that squeal is due to the rapid fluttering of the brake pad over the surface of the metal. I suspect that the ceramic pads are too dense for use with slotted rotors because when I switched them back to OEM disks my rotors were unevenly worn. Rings formed by the pads so much so that I could do nothing but throw the rotors in the garbage. These rotors were expensive too!!! My current pads are organic for front and semi metallic rear and I am happy as a big in mud. I stop just as quickly as the slotted too. IMO these rotors are looks only. A while back I read that drilled and slotted rotors were designed to be used with specific pads which produce a significant amount of gas when used. I believe these pads were track specific and the slots/drills where there to help dissipate this gas when driving track or autocross events.

And that's why you all should use the brake motive kit. Quiet, good stopping power, and cheap as hell.

Did you properly bed in the new brake hardware after install?

i dont think it has to do with slotted rotors. My car, from the previous owner, had new pads and oem (i believe) rotors installed at pep boys. Squeeling like crazy at a slow stop. Dont have $200 atm , so should i buy new pad from pep boys? Or maybe check if the shim is on, or if i should replace only the shim???

Find a long open road. Accelerate up to 60mph as soon as you safely can, then brake as hard as you can without engaging the abs.
Before you come to a complete stop, repeat a couple more times... but remember, never stop the car the entire time.
Drive around letting the brakes cool off before coming to a complete stop.

Its not the slotted rotors by themselves, more the hard ceramic pads and slotted rotors being chewed up. At least that is what I experienced with hawks and DBA rotors. This was one year in and a daily driver.

I guess not all rotors are built the same but at $300 for two front and $275 for the rear you would hope they are the last you ever buy.
