Hey.. My car sputters every time I try to take the boost past like 10psi, the engine just seems to miss or something every once and a while. Might it be that I need race gas? I'm running on California 91 octane. It also backfires which I guess is somewhat normal. But I’m going to the track tomorrow and I want to be able to run like 14psi, I'm going to put 107-octane race gas when I get to the track. But I don't want to break anything if it might be some other problem. This is my setup:

Greddy Boost controllerS13 BlacktopRocker arm stoppersHybrid intercooler (very large)Greddy TypeS bov3in down pipeProjectsilvia test pipeApex Dual N1 exhaustWalbro 255lph fuel pump

I'm going to put 2 gal of race gas; I'll have like 3-4gal in my tank probably. So I guess it'll easily be at least 100 octanes diluted.

I would check for boost/vac leaks.Mine does the same thing sometimes and I'm only runnin 7lbs.I need new intercooler piping but dont have the cash. All I can do right now is reposition the piping and tighten the clamps.

It does not do it at all at 10psi (spiking to 12), but at 14 (spiking to 16) it does it in like 1st gear and sometimes in second. It seems to only be when it initially boosts that it doe sit.

check everything listed above, my intercooler piping was a little loose and I had the same problem so check that.

Could be ignition breakup. Mine used to do it around 9psi+. The problem was way more prominent when you go 12psi+. I got the SplitFire coil pack upgrade and never seen it do it again. Run at 12.5psi daily now with less spikes.

I'll check my front IC piping. That sounds like it may be the problem.

check your exhaust too. exhaust leaks can show up with very weird sympotoms. backfiring of some sort usually comes form having a slight leak on your exhaust.

I think it was my BOV that was causing the sputter. I went to the track and tightened it down. It runs better in general now, it used to kinda be sluggish at low RPMs but now it's smooth all the way though. I didnt think the bov could cause low rpm problems but not high.. odd...

it would make sense. air was leaking out the BOV, causing odd sputtering problems. whenever you feel odd sputters, just check all places that air or gasses have to travel through

Ya.. The tubo is still leaking exhaust everywhere, i've gotta find a shop to replace all the gaskets. I don't really know how to take that all off myself, it seems really hard. I'd need to get under the car and such. ehh.. That sux.

Dont know for sure, but i believe stock MAFs might be starting to get funky around 14psi...have seen the same thing happen with a few cars Ive done swaps on and that was the only thing we came up with. Seemed to go away with loweing the boost to around 10 so it didnt ever spike to 14. Dont ask for the technical term of get funky either, because i wouldnt know the first thing about what tops out in a mafs :-)
