If your lucky just r & r bearings.\

But my experience is you have to turn the crank. Get the oval egg shape that the heat of the bearing or bearings that reformed the journal. If the bearing went real bad then you may need a new rod, if the rod went bad you may have to do something to the sleeve or cylinder.

Nothing a qualified machine shop cant check for you.

Good luck. My last experience with rod and crank issues was a little too much NOS!.

How often does this result in needing a new crank?

You could get the crank cut down or get another 8cw crank. If your going to rebuild it also change the oil pump and bang out the pan before you reinstall it.

The lower oil pan has a spot where the pick gets the oil. If that is smashed it will cause oil starvation and you will be back where you started.

when u take it off just look around where the pick up would be and see if it's dented in slightly and if it's not just pound it out a little to give you more breathing room.

He is right about the oil pan. If just a little nick is at the bottom it will cause oil starvation for the SR20DET engine.
