Hi,

I took my 2008 Versa with the CVT transmission in because it seemed like the car was over-revving and not accelerating appropriately. The problem has been getting worse for about two months. No other apparent problem with the car. I had the dealership look at it and they said I had spun a bearing in the engine which caused the transmission to go! The car has 80,000 miles on it so is past the engine warranty (60,000) but the transmission is covered to 120,000 miles. They said I had no coolant which caused the engine to overheat and that the sticker on the car said I had not changed my oil in 30,000 miles. They said they would only replace the transmission if I replaced the motor (3$600 used,$ 5400 new)! I declined because I don't have that kind of money and wanted to think this through. I got home and topped up the coolant which was down less than a quart. The oil change sticker would have actually been 21,000 miles ago and not 30,000 but I also changed the oil myself in the fall since with all of the vehicles I have it gets too expensive to get them all done at a shop. The car has also never overheated. They said there were slight traces of what appeared to be coolant in the oil. They did not mention metal shavings nor did they pull the oil pan to check the rod or main motor bearings. What appeared to be coolant may have been some remnant from an engine flush I did in the fall. The car runs great, no sound like what you would expect with a spun bearing. I also do not know how a spun bearing would ruin the transmission anyway. They made it sound like the whole thing was my fault and I was lucky they would even replace the transmission. On the generous side maybe it is just a poor diagnosis but it sounds to me like they don't want to pay for the transmission so they are trying to hit me with the cost of a new motor. I am going to take it to an independent shop I trust and have them look at it. Has anyone spun a bearing on their Versa so there is no discernible symptom? Maybe I am missing something but how does a spun bearing ruin your transmission? If anything it would seem more likely the other way around.
