How do you get it off? Is there a special trick? I know the nub that keeps it aligned kind of pushes down but does that help at all?

The crankshaft sprocket gives every one that rebuilds the CA hell! Atleast the majority of us! In very very rare ocasions it can come off by hand, rigging up a puller or wedging something behind it and tapping it out. If none of these options work, as they probably wont, its going to have to be cut off. When i ran into the same problem, i couldnt get that piece of crap of and left it upto my machinist to take it off. What he did was cut two holes into the front of the sprocket opposite of each other using an acetyline/oxygen torch and broke the thing in half. He didnt damage the crank or the old oil pump, which i didnt care for the old pump anyways. Goodluck!

i drilled and tapped two holes on opposite sides of the gear, and used ARP hardware and a homemade puller to get it off. i actually had to do it twice, because the first time i used too small a bolts and they just stretched and broke.

i find a airchisel behind it works nice. its not gonna work anymore tho.....

the part cost me 35$ cad for a new one...for a ca18de.

the metal plate behind it is like 3$ cad.

oh and be sure to polish up teh crank in front of it, where it has to move over to come off....rust will stop it.

i tried prying, heating, welding and pulling etc, and the most efficient and cleanest approach is what took it off. drill two holes on oposite sides, tap them then put 2 bolts in them with the right threads and use a slide hammer to pull it off. if you can handle a drill and a tap theres really no way to damage the crank or any other parts.

You wouldnt happen to have a picture of that puller you rigged up? Sounds like a good one now that i think of it. I put anti-sieze on the crank and sprocket this time around. I also put a little on the belt pulley.

the brown arrow at the bottom by the slide hammer points to the adapter that should be used. btw, anyone know a good image hosting site that doesnt put turbocivic at the bottom of my pictures

the thing i rigged up looks just like that, but the middle thing is threaded and you turn it so it pushes against the end of the crank and pulls the gear off. dont know if thats how that slide hammer thing works, but they seem essentially the same. when i got mine off there wasnt anything left to take pictures of...
