what is the benefit to this? and why would you do it on a linear spring? i guess on a progressive spring it would increase the spring rate but.... anyone?

Preloading the suspension basically eliminates some of the slop or makes it react faster... you can preload the sways as well.

The problem with this is that it requires alot of setup time, with preload you also need to re-corner weight the car because with a coilover setup you need to adjust the spring perch or ad shims (bad idea, but people do it) which will alter the weight distribution.

Another aspect that it can cause is a mid corner push/loose condition and very vague suspension problems that just don't wanna go away no matter what you tweak.

I'd suggest a zero pre-load on the spring

You'd get MUCH more from a good corner weight session than playing with spring pre-loads.

bringing back this old thread from the graveyard.

Ok, I'll be getting coilovers soon (kts coilovers). So you suggest not messing w/ the spring perch at all - zero preload? Would you also recommend this for lowered vehicles - SPL's instructions say something along the lines of adjusting the bump stops because the wheel may hit the fender, etc - got way too technical/non-visual for me.

So basically, I'll just hook it up so it holds the spring, and adjust the height/etc via the other perch?

Thanks a lot!

ok while we are on the subject...I to will soon have KTS and I have access to scales for corner weighting what should I be going for as far as each corners weight? I know as even as possible on each side, so should I set the heavyer at 0 preload then try and match the other? also what should I aim for front to rear? As is now I look like this... What are you shooting for, car wise? Mostly daily driver, etc?

I'd shoot for 51%f 49% rear, as this will give you just a tad bit of understeer naturally, but should aid corner exit speed nicely.

Also, do you plan on getting it done with you in the car, or without?

Well Id rather do it with me in the car...I depends semeter ends soon, around the time when my coilovers get here. So If they get here before the end Ill have a couple of guys from class do it with me in the car, If not I will have to wait untill summer session and do it myself, as summer class is intro and random 17 year olds in into to auto dont get to play with my new suspension In wich case I guess I should round up some weights to sit im my driver seat. Yeah its going to be some autox and more daily driving.

Mmm rally this sunday... Ive missed 2 so far out of the 4, stupid work and speed tv cutting down on the coverage.

Your weights are worthless after you install new suspension.

You will need to re-weigh the car and adjust from there.
