spring from pedals?

I found a spring about 5 inches long, with a black piece of plastic on one end, on my floor mat under the pedals today as I was getting out of my car. It's confusing, because everything felt the same, nothing stuck or anything.

Anybody know what it might have come from?

Each pedal has a spring on it somewhere. The brake and clutch have the hydraulic pressure to return the pedal to the top, and the gas pedal is connected to the throttle body which has a spring to return it to the closed position, so its possible that everything might work fine even with a missing spring at the pedal. Look around real good at each pedal, if you cant find a spring on it, thats where it probably came from.
