I have an odd sound coming from under my car when I go over bumps. It sounds like two spoons being hit together lightly. (everyone go try it) I cant pinpoint which side but it sounds more in the rear. Any ideas?

You guys are a real help.

I have the same thing. Mine happens more toward the back of the Z. Where do you think yours is coming from?

Its more in the rear, I wish i had a lift. Im thinking heat shield, thats the only thing that comes to mind.

Damn leprechauns with spoons....

Maybe think of change in your pocket clanking against your keys as you walk...

How long has yours been making this sound?

Swaybar bushings.

Since it happens on bumps, think of all of the things that move when you go over a bump. If you can, try to isolate one side of the car and only roll over a bump (speed bump) in a parking lot and see if the noise reproduces itself.

If you have any dynamat or equivalent sound deadening material handy, apply some (3-4"x1") to the heat shield either in the corners or centered along the longest side. The deadener should eliminate the sound if it is that heat shield.

Other possibilites could be exhaust hangers.

If it starts getting louder and you can hear it with any jarring of acceleration or deceleration in the rear then it could be the rear axles. Nissan has a TSB about having to fix that. Beware though even though its drivetrain they won't cover it under warranty.

I had the car up a little to put on some wheel spacers and tried pin pointing the noise with no luck. I was using the factory jack so I was not able to really get under the car. I grabbed everything I could reach and found no rattles.

where would i find info on the axel TSB Aris? I looked on 350z-tech and could not find it.

I did learn the grease marks on my side windows was a recal and so is the loud tire noise when braking under 30mph... bummer..

Alright, everyone has said the technical things to look at, now I'm going to take the chance of sounding like a dullard and give my idea. Check where the spare tire is and see if the tools are loose. I saw that you said you used the stock jack to lift the car...was the jack and it's tools loose when you removed it? Is there anything that may have made it's way via leprechan in the spare tire houseing that might be making the noise? Hopefully it's something simple like I suggested and not something expensive and if it is hopefully it's under warranty or a recall. Good luck.

^ Good call. This happened to me on my truck a few years back. Weird buzzing noise at lower rpms sounded like it came from a loose exhaust bolt from under the cabin. I checked out every single bolt twice and failed to locate the noise. It turned out to be my lug wrench behind the bench improperly fastened to its compartment. BTW check this out for TSB's http://www.350z-tech.com/zwiki/Category:TSB

I like the way way you guys think, thats the first thing I checked when I got the jack out. Nothing was looe, tools were snug, never been used.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm really hoping its not the axel issues mentioned by Aris. Anyone find the TSB for that?
